CWL U18 Girls League

This game had it all. Firstly it was great to see such good numbers attending, our biggest of the year! To add to that we were missing our keeper and 4 girls offered to do the key roll which was super. In the end Grace started in goals and had such a great game that she stayed for the whole game. This was always going to be a difficult game as only weeks ago Blarney beat us 5-0. They started well but we battled hard to stay with them. They then took the lead when a strong shot to the roof of the net which Grace could only get her hands to but it slipped in. Then a few minutes later a nice move involving Lauren setting Ashling away down the left and she made it inside the area before cutting it back to Rachel who calmly controlled the ball before finishing to make it 1-1. Midfield of Ellen, Niamh, Aoife and Lauren worked hard and Rachel and Ashling Harty were chasing everything up front. They had several chances before the break but we had determined defending by Lucy, Andy, Ashling Murphy and Charley in front of the very dependable Grace. They did manage to get a penalty which they hit against the post and we cleared and meant it was 1-1 at the break.
The second half was even more exciting as we pressed forward. Roisin and Mischa came in on the wings and were great as were Ciara and Courtney coming in up front. Then we were awarded a free outside the box followed by an indirect free inside the box, followed by a penalty which was saved. Then just minutes later another free just outside the box but in a very central position. Lauren struck it perfectly to give us the lead and make up for the earlier penalty. Blarney were not giving up and continued to go at us and were rewarded when they got their second goal. There was another twist in the game as with just 5 minutes remaining a long distance free kick struck by Ashling Harty ended up in the back of the net as their keeper could only get her hands to but failed to keep out of the net. Overall a very satisfying win for the girls and well deserved. Player of the match had to go to our keeper Grace Cotter after a great display in goals.
Team: Grace Cotter, Lucy Horgan, Charley Moore, Ashling Murphy, Andy Cuthbert, Aoife Mitchell, Niamh Molloy, Ellen Harty, Lauren Linehan, Rachel O Sullivan(Capt), Ashling Murphy, Roisin O Brien, Ciara Carry, Courtney English, Mischa Daly Harkin.
