Under 12 2012/13 Division 1 Match Reports

League at home to Mayfield United on Sunday 24th March 2013
Midleton 4 Mayfield United 0
An outstanding team performance from all the lads today capped off with 4 goals. Two first half goals from the excellent Ronan Hayes and Edbhan de Barra saw the lads breeze in at the half. With two goals in the second half coming from the boots of nippy Eoghan Martin and tricky Max Ahern. Excellent performers all over the park today but one man just stood out, that man was Ronan Hayes with his most complete display in the black and white stripes to date. Well done Ronan

Local Cup away to Douglas Hall on Sunday 17th March 2013
Douglas Hall 3 Midleton 0

Midleton crashed out of the local cup today. No complaints on the day as Douglas Hall deserved to win as they took their chances in front of goal and The Magpies did'nt. The first half was very even with Midleton keeping the Hall to long range efforts. The best chance fell to Midleton striker Eabhan de Barra who had his shot just blocked by the Hall keeper.h/t 0-0.

In the second half Midleton never really got going and let Hall take an early lead. Samuel Quirke was running the show along with Eoghan Martin in midfield and to be fair the lads never gave up. Jack Lamb was back to his best and "Captain" David Scanlon was also impressive. Two more goals followed which flattered Douglas Hall with a three nil win.Two teams that were well matched the only difference was the home team had the advantage on the Astro pitch. On the day Midletons best performers were Sam Quirke, Jack Lamb, Eoghan Martin and David Scanlon. The days man of the match goes to Quirke who displayed a master class in midfield. Back to his best form, keep it going Samuel.

League away to Tramore Athletic on Saturday 2nd March 2013
Tramore Athletic 3 Midleton 2

When a team does not start at the first whistle then there are going to be problems. At Tramore Park it was the home team who seem to want it most, with any 50/50 ball all won by Tramore and it was no surprise that after ten minutes Midleton were two down. It was only then that our lads woke up and could of been back in the game only for a Midleton pen to narrowly clear the bar. Still, the half finished with Midleton pressing hard. h/t 2-0

In the second half with Eabhan de Barra leading the forward line and Nial Morgan looking lively we thought it only a matter of time for the lads to get the breakthrough, it came from a free kick from de Barra placed just too high for the keeper to control. Back in the game and pressing hard with Eoghan Martin and John Carroll pushing on from the midfield there looked like only one team in it, but as happens sometimes, Tramore had a lucky break and they made it 3-1. The lads did not let their heads drop and continued to push on and de Barra was rewarded with a second goal. Midleton went three at the back with Conor Ronayne on to bolster the attack but unfortunatly time ran out with Tramore with their backs well and truly to the wall. Apart from the first costly ten minutes the boys tried hard a should of got something from the game. On the day stand out performers were de Barra, Morgan and Adam Meade who was a giant at the back. But just edging them was David Scanlon who played left back with a magnificent performance. Great game David.

League at home to Avondale United on Sunday 24th February 2013
Midleton 2 Avondale United 1

A fine morning for a soccer match was matched by a fine performance on the pitch. Straight from the whistle the Magpies were out to win this one. They pressed Avondale who did not have any reply to fine forward play from Richard Phillips and tricky Max Ahern. Playing behind the front two was Eoghan Martin who caused all kinds of trouble for the defenders from Avondale. In the centre on midfield John Carroll was dominating and Sam O\'Reilly was causing all kinds of trouble down the right. Paul Connaughton was in top form on the left of midfield. Although we had all the play in the first half we could not put the ball in the net and if we went in 3 up at the half Avondale could have no complaints. In spite of one cracking effort from Phillips and Ahern coming very close twice the half ended level. H/T 0-0

After ten minutes in the second half Midleton brought on the "powerhouse" Eabhan de Barra. It was an inspired substitution when he latched onto a Phillips cross to put Midleton one up. Minutes later he made it two after rounding the keeper and slotting in from a tight angle. As we know we always make it hard on ourselves and with only their first attempt they pulled one back. The reason it was their first effort was down to a super performance from our defenders, Murphy and Jallil were rocks and supported by Scanlon and Gary Carroll there was little for Avondale to worry Bawden in the Midleton goal. In an excellent performance the team saw the game to its conclusion. F/T 2-1.

Today's man of the match performance was very close between Murphy and Jallil in defense, Martin and J Carroll in midfield and de Barra and Phillips up front. Although de Barra got the all important goals for his all round game today Richard Phillips just gets the nod. Super game Richard, keep it going.

Local Cup away to St Mary's on Saturday 9th February 2013
St Marys 2 Midleton 3

A good cup tie at St Marys saw the away side just edge it.The first half saw a gem from Eoghan Martin who picked up the ball after a Marys goal kick and ran past two defenders to neatly slot into the bottom corner. Marys levelled with what looked like an offside goal, the lead was restored when de Barra took a free kick from the edge of the box and beat the keeper with a cracker. h/t 1-2

Midleton were well in control but gave up a second goal from some sloppy defending and the home team made it two all. Other than that the defence of Lamb, Jallil, G Carroll and Murphy all played very solid. With Quirke and J Carroll controlling the middle and Hayes bombing down the right wing it was only a matter of time for Morgan to score the eventual winner. He did what all top class strikers do when he pounced on to a dropped ball from the keeper to slot home. Todays man of the match has to go to Eoghan Martin with what was probably his best performance in the black and white shirt.

League at home to Springfield Ramblers A on Sunday 13th January 2013
Midleton 1 Springfield Ramblers A 0

Another close scoring match that did not do justice to the dominant play from Midleton. The game was settled in the first half when Paul Connaughton popped up in the area to slide in a nice finish from a cross from John Carroll. Although Midleton pressed hard the lads could not manage to increse the lead. There were some good performers on the Magpie team, in defence Brendan jallil stood out with some very cool defending.

The midfield was graced with an excellent performance from John Carroll. He tackled well and played some magnificent passes. All said and done three points were achieved today but to gain promotion we have to get our shooting boots on and put teams away. The man of the match goes to John Carroll who stood out over all 22 players on the pitch today, keep going like this John and you won't go far wrong.

League away to Douglas Hall on Sunday 6th January 2013
Douglas Hall 1 Midleton 1

A really entertaining game of football was served up today. It finished up a draw but on the day we could of won or lost so a draw was a fair result. A very tight first half with nothing between the teams, Midleton looked very solid at the back with good performances from Christian, Paul, Brendan and a mighty effort from David Scanlon. Our midfield with a slightly new formation saw "Captain" Jack Lamb play in front of the back four with a really good performance. In the middle John Carroll was spraying the ball around to great effect with the wide players Hayes and Martin playing superb. The front two of Morgan and Ronayne pressed hard and fought well but couldnt get the break through. h/t 0-0

The game kicked off the second half looking like 1 goal would decide it and it was Morgan who made the breakthrough after good work from Conor to set him up, still it was a great finish. The Hall did not appear to be able to break the Magpies and victory was near. As happens they did score and as they say, "goals change games". Well this one did and it took some work for our lads to keep the score level. To be fair the final whistle came and it was probably a relief more to Midleton rather than Douglas Hall. Still lads when your backs were to the wall you deserved something from the game. The man of the match was really tough today, Connaughton and Martin on the left had really good games. Scanlon and Murphy were in top form for the defence, John Carroll and Lamb in midfield were outstanding and Ronayne and Morgan played out of their skins. But the man of the match goes to our stand in goal keeper Matthew O'Connor, He did not put a glove wrong all day and he showed bravery and intelligence throughout. Well done Matthew.

League away to Riverstown on Sunday 9th December 2012
Riverstown 5 Midleton 2

A good game of football which Riverstown won 5-2. Midleton started the brightest and went up 1-0 after a super volley from Conor Ronayne. Riverstown came back into it to level but it was Ronan Hayes that scored for the Magpies to make it 1-2. Unfortunately that was as good as it was going to get for Midleton despite some tremendous defending from Jack Lamb and some exceptional midfield work from Paul Connighton, the big Town team seemed to have too much physically for our lads. There were still pleanty to admire from our performance, football will eventually beat brute force and if we keep to our good football we will go far. The man of the match could of gone to Conor, Paul or Jack. But Jack Lamb just edged it over a solid 60 minute display. Keep it going Jack.

League at home to Corinthian Boys A on Sunday 18th November 2012
Midleton 1 Corinthian Boys A 1

On a day when even the ducks wore wellies Midleton played out a 1-1 draw with Corinthians. If possession ment goals then the Magpies would of won easially, but unfortunatly you have to put that little white thing into the net. That is exactly what David Scanlon did to tie the game at 1-1 in the first half. A quick clever free kick from Eoghan Martin was worked well in to the Corrs box which they cleared only for Scanlon to drive it back from fully 25 yards. It truly was a magnificent strike from the right back. h/t 1-1.

As the weather got worse the effort from the lads got better, they kept pressing and with good efforts from Eabhan de Barra and Richard Phillips we thought it only a matter of time for the winner to come but unfortunatly the refs whistle was blown to the relief of Corinthians. There was some fine performances out there today from Scanlon at the back, Samuel Querke and John Carroll both performing well and nice forward play from de Barra. But the man of the match came from our keeper Rory Bawden. It wasn't that he had a lot to do but with conditions for a goalkeeper nearly impossible Bawden was immaculate. His handling of the wet ball was top class and when he had to kick out the ball he never once gave the ball away. Great game from a great keeper.

League at home to Tramore Athletic on Sunday 4th November 2012
Midleton 4 Tramore Athletic 1

A good performance today which was backed up with goals. Eabhan de Barra netted twice the first on 24 minutes after he was set up by srtike partner Max Ahern and the second a couple of minutes later after good work from a very impressive Sam O'Reilly. Usually our defenders take the credit and indeed they played very well with Jack Lamb and Adam Meade outstanding at the back. Midfielders did as was asked creating chances for the strikers, Samuel Quirke was immense, working hard with Craig Healy in the centre and the wide players Paul Connaughton and Sam O'Reilly always giving Tramore trouble.h/t 2-0

Sam O'Reilly capped a fine display when he scored a cracker in the second minute to put the Mgpies 3 up. At this stage we we running rampant, Tramore had no answer to the threat of Midleton. Maybe it was the three goal lead and we took the foot off the pedal but from a short Tramore corner they crossed in and scored a soft goal that goal keeper Rory Bawden could do little about. The game finished up after Craig Healy won a ball he had no rite to win and crossed it in for man of the match Max Ahern to rifel into the net. The little striker got what he deserved with a goal to cap his performance.

League at home to Greenwood on Saturday 13th October 2012
Midleton 0 Greenwood 2

A tough day for Midleton Under 12's in the league today. In a hard fought battle, Greenwood shaded the game after scoring from the only two real chances created from either team. Their first came early in the first half when a free kick was delivered down the middle, it passed four Midleton players who let it run and it was left for an easy goal for the grateful Greenwood forward. The early part of the game was dominated by the visitors only for the tide to turn and Midleton had the upper hand later on. Against the run of play Greenwood went two up after the Midleton defence fell asleep from a short corner. They were able to put in a cross for the attacker to head home. h/t 0-2

What you are guaranteed from Midleton is fight, and fight they did. Without creating any clear cut chances the lads battled, never giving in. In the last four games Greenwood scored twenty two and only conceded two so it was a credit to Midleton that they ran the visitors so close. On the day top performers were Gary Carroll, Christian Murphy, Craig Healy and man of the match Samuel Quirke.

League away to Springfield A on Sunday 7th October 2012
Springfield A 1 Midleton 2

Nice to get back to winning ways. The game started off very well after the first minute when Eabhan de Barra latched on to a fumble when the Springers keeper spilled a wet slippy ball. An easy goal for the Midleton marksman but he was in the right place and his efforts were rewarded. The first half went in the favour of the Magpies always pushing on and giving Springfield limited opportunities. The midfield pair of Max Ahern and our player of the month, Samuel Quirke, combining well together. Sam O'Reilly playing down the right with Paul Connaughton looking dangerous on the left. As in recent games the defence was in top form, Lamb, Carroll, Jallil and Adam Meade all doing the right things not giving Springers a look in. With Richard Phillips and de Barra as a strike partnership the boys in black and white would always be in with a goal threat. Five minutes befor the interval de Barra had a free kick five yards outside the area, his kick came back off the wall straight to him and he cooly slotted it left footed into the top corner. h/t 0-2.

Second half subs Matthew O'Connor came on for Gary Carroll and played very well along with John Carroll who slotted into midfield along with the hardworking Craig Healy. Christian Murphy came on at centre back and did his usual top class defending. The second half saw Springfield come back into the game and they were rewarded after the wet ball slipped from the hands of Rory Bawden in the Midleton goal. Every keeper makes one mistake now and again but in Bawden we have a keeper of top ability and we would not swap him for any other u12 goalie, he has kept us in games befor today. Midleton held their cool and closed the game out to collect the three points. Man of the match goes to de Barra for his two goals and great efforts. Well done Eabhan. t/t 1-2

National Cup away to Carrigaline United on Sunday 30th September 2012
Carrigaline United 0 Midleton 0. Carrigaline won 5-3 on penalties.

A great performance from the lads today. Midleton took on the might of Premier league Carrigaline, the home team having the advantage of playing week in week out on the plastic grass, a huge advantage for them. If work ethic got you goals we would of won this one 4-0 but unfortunatly it went to the lottery of penalties and they had the luck on the day. Our team were led by our defenders today who were immense. Jack Lamb, Gary Carroll, Christian Murphy and Brendan Jallil all put in top class performances, the midfield led by Samuel Querke along with Ronan Hayes, Paul Connaughton, John Carroll and Craig Healy all did the jobs asked of them and won the midfield battles. Up front Niall Morgan played the lone striker with tireless work, he ran his socks off for the cause. The first half ended 0-0 after the two defences came out on top. h/t 0-0

Ronan Hayes took a knock and was replaced by Richard Phillips for the second half, Phillips came close twice one saved well by the keeper the second when he saw the keeper off his line and took on the shot only to narrowly miss the target. Our keeper Rory Bawden did pull off a top class save diving to his right to save from a good header. But that apart we kept the home team to few chances. Max Aherne and Eoghan Martin came on and gave their all.f/t 0-0
Extra time saw Midleton more likly to win the game, a free kick by Eabhan de Barra just missing was the closest we came to the winner. Carrigaline did have one effort that was goal bound only for Gary Carroll to clear off the line. f/t 0-0 Bawden in goal had no chance with any of the pens and we lost out 5-3. Man of the match performers were all over the park today but Paul Connaughtons performance today just clinched it for him, excellent game Paul.

League at home to Douglas Hall on Sunday 23rd 2012
Midleton 0 Douglas Hall 0

A tough game as expected from a decent Douglas Hall ouutfit, today Midleton pressed hard but did not manage to find the back of the net. An early chance came to Ronan Hayes when one on one with the keeper he just scooped his shot over the Hall crossbar. Hall pressed but today our defense was in top form. Lamb, Murphy, Jalill and Gary Carroll all shut out any attacks and the centre mid field pair of John Carroll and Sam Querke played magnificiently. Up front de Barra and Morgan pressed but could not find the back of the net.h/t 0-0.

To be fair in the second half we never created many clear cut chances to win the game at the same time Hall were kept very quiet throughout with our defense dominating. Phillips, O'Reilly, Connaughton and Ronayne came on but we still could not get the break through. All in all it was two points dropped but we are still unbeaten and looking solid as a team. Man of the match came from Samuel Querke with a fine display.
Well done Samuel. ft 0-0

League away to Mayfield United on Sunday 16th September 2012
Mayfield United 2 Midleton 3

A much changed team to our first match but with the same three points in the bag. Midleton did make hard work of this one with chance after chance not taken, but lets not forget that the hardest part of scoring a goal is to create the goalscoring chance firstly, and the lads did that. Eoghan Martin today was a provider and goal scorer notching up a cracking hat-trick. His first came after good work from Richard Phillips who put in Martin to run on and cooly bury his shot into the corner of the net. Seven minutes later after a foul on Conor Ronayne it was Martin who stepped up to put the ball past the Mayfield keeper. At this point it looked a formality that the three points were on the way back to East Cork, but Mayfield did not lie down and were awarded a pen of their own after an unfortunate trip in the area from our Captain Christian Murphy. A big man was needed at this moment and our keeper Rory Bawden pulled off a magnificent save from a well taken pen. Two minutes later Murphy thought the football gods were against him when the ref pulled him for hand ball in the area. On this occasion the ref was correct and this time Bawden had no chance with the pen. In what was an interesting seven minute spell Mayfield were awarded a free kick for another hand ball from Murphy, this one the ref got wrong. They blasted the kick high into the Midleton net, no chance for Bawden. H/T 2-2

The second half Midleton had the wind at their backs and with constant pressure from Carroll and Ahern in the middle, Sam O'Reilly down the right and Martin causing havoc on the left along with Ronayne and Phillips coming close on more than one occasion and with our defenders, Meade, O'Connor, Murphy and Scanlon in top form it looked like a draw was on the cards. But today was Eoghan Martins day to shine and it was he who put in a shot in the last five minutes to give all the points, deservedly, to the boys in the famous black and whith stripes of Midleton. Man of the match Martin. F/T Mayfield 2 Midleton 3

League at home to Riverstown on Sunday 9th September 2012
Midleton 3 Riverstown 0

A good start to the season with a fairly convincing home win. Midleton from the start were pressing the visitors with some good work down the right from Ronan Hayes and it was from this side that de Barra put in a pin point cross for Morgan to head home just in the six yard box. The striker showed no fear making a tremendous connection to head the ball into the net. There was only twelve minutes gone at this stage but it took till the stroke of half time to add the second. It came from a penalty from de Barra after he was fouled in the area. He took it himself with an unstoppable strike into the roof of the net. h/t 2-0

The Magpies continued the second half as in the first totally dominating the game. What was really pleasing was the performance of the defense, whenever Riverstown broke through either Jack Lamb, Brendan Jalill, Gary Carroll or Christian Murphy put everything on the line to stop Riverstown. There was notable performances up front with Morgan making some great runs and from midfield Samuel Querke putting in tremendous effort. The third goal came from Richard Philips who used his pace from the halfway line to score a cracker of a goal that Theo Walcott would be proud. Today the man of the match has to go to Murphy who put in some real bone crunching challenges, Van Persie would of had trouble with him today. f/t 3-0
