Under 12A 2014/15 Division 5 Match Reports

League Away V Everton A on Saturday 25th April 2015
Everton A 1 Midleton 4

Our final game of the season was a trip to Togher to play Everton A. With promotion still on the cards we needed a win and then hope that other results go our way.

The game got off to a tense start and Everton were proving difficult to navigate and were strong in midfield. It took several attacks before the breakthrough came on 13 minutes. After a strong move involving Keith Cleary and Kalem Keane the ball was knocked clear on the edge of the box were Kalem found a yard of space and shot into the corner to make it 1-0 to Midleton.

The lead did not last long, and on 16 minutes a throw on the right wing put through Everton who scored off the far post. This was a shock to some players who thought this may be an easy win and in response Midleton stepped it up a gear.

On 25 minutes we got our second goal when a determined Ciarmhac Smyth won the ball in midfield and took off on a great run, beating five players before blasting the ball into the roof of the net. A fantastic goal and we went in 2-1 up at half time.

We made several changes at half time and then the heavens opened and it started to rain very heavily. The rain continued for the next 15 minutes and it made any good play impossible. As the rain died off, Midleton were able to pick up the tempo. On 50 minutes, Kalem picked up the ball on the right wing and made a mazy run before finishing well into the far corner of the net.

A few minutes later, Keith Cleary and Ciarmhac won the ball in midfield and a fine pass set Kalem free to beat the keeper with a low shot. This was the last score and the game finished 4-1 to Midleton.

It was a deserving finish to a great season and the lads should be very proud of their achievements.

League At Home V Ballinhassig on Thursday 23rd April 2015
Midleton 2
Ballinhassig 0
As the league draws to a close, the games are coming thick and fast. This was our third game in eleven days. However, the squad system continues to work well and the lads were determined to keep the winning streak going.

Ballinhassig were the opposition and it was important we got off to a fast start. This proved to be the case and right from the off the midfield and forward players attacked at will and within 5 minutes a through ball from Conan Hickey put Kalem Keane clear and after an initial save from the keeper, he scored with the rebound.

The opportunities kept coming but we were trying to make it too easy and walk the ball into the net, with the result that the Ballinhassig lads were able to get back and defend. On 17 minutes we did get our second, again good work by Kalem and Keith Cleary after a corner, led to Kalem's shot being blocked. However, James O'Sullivan was first to react and score with a half volley into the far corner.

At this point it looked like we would push on and get more goals. However, the visitors had other ideas and defended extremely well for the remainder of the first half. In the second half, Reuben Fashola replaced Jason in goals and Colin Sunderland, Conor Clarke and Kamil Michalak came on as subs on front. The chances continued to be created but the goals did not come.

The end result was never in doubt and the game tapered off as the heat took its toll on the players. It was another good win and the fact that 2-0 is seen as an average result for the lads is a sign of how far they have progressed this season.

Our final game of the season is on Saturday away to Everton and a win will put us in third place with our closest rivals still able to overtake us by a point if they win their last game. A great nail biting finish to the season.

League Away V Grenagh CC on Wednesday 15th April 2015
Grenagh CC 2 Midleton 4

With our second game in three days, the lads had a tough task to go away to a strong Grenagh United team. As expected Grenagh started very strongly and were a particular threat down their right wing. On 15 minutes they took the lead when their winger cut inside and found some space to get a shot away into the corner. Midleton fought right back and our desire to win shone through when we won two strong tackles in midfield and a pass to Kalem Keane sent him clear. He controlled the ball, beat two defenders and fired home to level the game. The rest of the half was very even. Midleton moved some defensive cover to the left side that reduced the influence of the Grenagh right winger and the half ended 1-1.

With the experience of the first 30 minutes behind them, the Midleton lads knew what they had to do and started the second half in top gear. Ciarmhac Smyth, Keith Cleary and Luke Hourigan were dominating the midfield and Grenagh resorted to long balls which were easily cut out by Fintan Greenwood and Rory Hartnett. They were well supported by Ben Lowen and Aaron Smyth in both full back positions. After a sterling performance in the first half, Colin Sunderland came off and was replaced by James O'Sullivan and Reuben Fashola was replaced by Jason Gray in goals. Both subs had an excellent second half and it was the paring of James with Kalem up front that led to the second goal for Midleton on 40 mins. After some great work by James, Kalem found some space in a crowded box, turned his defender and got a shot away to beat a very good Grenagh keeper.

Midleton had several chances but the Grenagh defence were very good and some last ditch tackles prevented us from scoring. On 50 mins Grenagh got a free kick on the right wing and a floated ball was headed in for the equaliser. This was against the run of play and it looked like the game may well end a draw. However, two more subs came on for Midleton, Kamil Michalak replaced Conan Hickey who had another great game on the right of the front three and Phelim Magan replaced Aaron Smyth at left back. Again, both subs contributed well and Kamil added some fresh legs up front that caused a lot of problems for Grenagh. On 56 mins Midleton got their reward and again it was good feet by Kalem who after good work by Kamil and James, beat two players on the edge of the box and got a powerful shot away that put us in front again. The team pushed on, not wanting to sit back and James O'Sullivan and Luke Hourigan worked hard to win a series of throws on the left wing. Finally, a long throw beat the defenders and Ciarmhac Smyth controlled the bounce to hit a great shot into the top corner and put the game beyond doubt.

It was a superb 4-2 win for the lads that takes them into third place with two games to go. The whole team deserve credit for their attitude and their determination to win. On the night there were excellent performances from Luke, Keith and Ciarmhac in midfield with Ciarmhac scoring his second goal of the week. Luke and Keith were particularly good in tracking back and helping out their defence.

Upfront, Kalem is continuing his good form with another hat-trick. He is getting plenty of chances due to the creativity of Conan Hickey, Colin Sunderland, James O'Sullivan and Kamil Michalak. At the back we are really solid and the four defenders have a great understanding of each other and their jobs. In goal Reuben and Jason are sharing the duties and on this occasion Jason made some excellent saves at the feet of on-rushing attackers that ensured we stayed in control.

Man of the match was Jason Gray for some excellent work in goals.

League Home V Lakewood Athletic A on Sunday 12th April 2015
Midleton 5 Lakewood Athletic A 2

Today the lads faced Lakewood who are chasing the title. However, Midleton were not in the mood to lose and the boys gave their best performance of the season in a comprehensive 5-2 win.

After a nervous start, Lakewood took the lead when a looping header beat our keeper. Midleton did not get their heads down and within a couple of minutes we were level after Ciarmhac Smyth put through Kalem Keane and he beat three players and scored into the far corner.

On 12 mins Lakewood regained the lead after a ball bobbled across the goal and went in off the far post. It took Midleton a while to find our feet after this but on 20 mins Luke Hourigan hit a shot from 30 yards which beat the keep with ease. This gave us the momentum and in the final 10 mins of the first half we scored twice. A neat pass from Keith Cleary to Kalem and his shot was just going wide when Kamil Michalak tapped in at the back post.

The fifth goal was another great shot. Ciarmhac Smyth picked up a lose ball and smashed it from 20 yards out on the right of the box. The first half finished all Midleton and a 5-2 lead.

The second half was a game of midfield battles and our three of Keith, Ciarmhac and Luke dominated with help from Conan Hickey and Kalem.

As the legs tired we brought on Reuben Fashola for Jason in goals. Fawaz Bakinson for Kalem and Colin Sunderland for Kamil. At the back we continued to work hard and Ben Lowen, Rory Hartnett, Fintan Greenwood and Aaron Smyth were all outstanding.

Understandably, it was impossible to pick one player for man of the match, so this week it goes to the whole team for a great performance. Well done.

League Away V Riverstown A on Sunday 29th March 2015
Riverstown A 2 Midleton 1

This was a tough game on a windy day against Riverstown A, who were right behind us in the league vying for 3rd place. With several players missing we had to use the whole squad and everyone played to their max.

Riverstown got a goal after 10 min when a fortunate bounce took a low shot over the diving keeper. We responded well and dominated the game after this, equalising 5 mins later. It stayed 1-1 to half time.

In the second half we continued to fight really hard but Riverstown were slightly stronger in possession. After 45 mins they got a penalty after a handball in the box. The penalty was well taken and although we continued to push for another goal, we could not get that bit of luck we needed.

It was an excellent game and the players deserve credit for their performance against another good team. Rory Hartnett was man of the match for a great centre half display and Jason Gray deserves credit for an excellent and very brave double save in the second half.

Team: Reuben Fashola, Godwin Ojelabi, Rory Hartnett, Fintan Greenwood, Aaron Smyth, Ciarmhac Smyth, Keith Cleary, Kalem Keane, Conan Hickey, James O'Sullivan, David Hefaluk. SUBS: Conor Clarke, Colin Sunderland, Fawaz Backinson, Jason Gray.

League at Home V Castleview B on Sunday 15th March 2015
Midleton 5
Castleview B 0
On a cold morning the boys had a tough game against a strong Castleview team. It was only the second league game of the year and it took 15 minutes for the team to really get going.

With a real tussle in midfield it was the determination of Ciarmhac Smyth and Luke Hourigan that eventually led to dominance by Midleton. On 17 minutes Kalem Keane picked up the ball on the right wing and made a run to goal where he was brought down in the box. He placed the spot kick high into the goal for a deserved lead. Only two minutes later, Kalem was first to a kick out and had an early shot from 16 yards for our second. The first half finished at 2 nil to Midleton but Castleview were still making it difficult for us.

Jason Gray, Conor Clarke, Kamil Michalak and Victor Kimoni came on in the second half to bring some added strength to the team and all played really well.

The team went out in the second half without a renewed focus and Luke, Ciarmhac and Conan Hickey took complete control in midfield. Conan had a Superb second half and led by example as captain. On 35 mins the third goal came from great work from the midfield three, who won the ball back and then a slick through pass put Kalem in for a neat finish under the keeper for his hat-trick.

Conor clarke came close after great work by Luke and Conan on the right wing and the cross was hit on the volley by Conor from 15 yards and narrowly went over the top.It was a great piece of skill.

On 50 mins Conan Hickey single handedly fought against three Castleview lads and won a free kick on the right wing. He took the free kick and placed it brilliantly into the path of Ciarmhac who scored from close range for the fourth goal.

The fifth goal came on 55 mins when Luke and Ciarmhac again tackled hard in midfield to win the ball and put Kalem in to score his fourth.

The Midleton defence continued to work tirelessly and were tested right to the end. However, Rueben and Jason who shared the goalkeeping duties and Ben, Rory, Victor, Phelim and Aaron who all took their turn in defence were excellent all day.

It was a good all round performance but our two midfielders of Luke and Ciarmhac are worthy winners of this weeks 'Man of the Match' awards.

Team: Reuben Fashola, Jason Gray, Ben Lowen, Phelim Magan, Rory Hartnett, Aaron Smyth, Ciarmhac Smyth, Luke Hourigan, Kalem Keane, Conan Hickey, James O'Sullivan, Colin Sunderland. SUBS: Conor Clarke, Kamil Michalak, Victor Kimoni

League at Home V Springfield Ramblers A on Sunday 1st Febuary 2015
Midleton 7
Springfield Ramblers A 0
After a long wait the team finally had a match to play and they made the most of it. The weather was great but the pitch was very muddy. After several good attempts were saved and some last ditch tackles by Springfield, Midleton scored their first goal after 25 minutes. Conan Hickey received the ball on the edge of the box after good work by Colin Sunderland an Kalem Keane. He held off the defenders, and then turned and shot high above the keeper. Within a few minutes he had his second, when Conan went on a solo run from the half way line, past three defenders before firing low into the near corner to make it 2-0. The rest of the rest of the first half was all Midleton but the visitors defended well to keep us out.

The second half started much the same and it was not until the 42 minute that the third goal came. Two new subs, Conor Clarke and Luke Hourigan combined with a neat one-two to find some space and a perfect pass to Kalem seen him score from close range. Two more subs, Fintan Greenwood and Ciramhac Smyth blended into the defence and midfield and with this added strength the front players had space to go at the Springfield Ramblers defence. On 45 minutes Keith Cleary and Luke played a short corner with the resulting cross falling to Kalem who scored from 6 yards. The fifth and sixth goals came after excellent work in midfield that released Kalem who scored both goals from 16 yards out with well placed shots.

On 55 minutes Conan had his third goal. Collecting the ball on the left wing and set off on another solo run before scoring at the near post. Two excellent hat-tricks from Kalem and Conan earn them the joint man of the match award. However, it was the hardwork in defence and midfield that ensured they had the opportunities. Overall a great team result.

Team: Reuben Fashola, Ben Lowen, Phelim Magan, Rory Hartnett, Aaron Smyth, Keith Cleary, Ola Wahab, Kalem Keane, Conan Hickey, Mubaraq Awobimpe, Colin Sunderland. SUBS: Ciarmhac Smyth, Luke Hourigan, Fintan Greenwood and Conor Clarke.

League at Home V Kilree Celtic on Sunday 7th December 2014
Midleton 4
Kilree Celtic 0
A superb performance by the team against a hard working Kilree Celtic. With six changes to the starting Eleven there was a lot for the boys to contend with but they did it with style. Dominating from the start they put Kilree under pressure and their keeper had to make several excellent saves. Eventually, after 15 mins the breakthrough came with a neat pass from Phelim Magan to James O'Sullivan and a measured finish put us one up. The pressure continued and on 25 mins Josh Cope got the ball on the left side and played a lovely ball to Kalem Keane who scored high into the corner. Kilree improved in the second half and the boys had to dig deep to keep control. On 42 mins we got a bit of luck when a free kick floated in by Kalem bounced around the box before James O'Sullivan got a head to it and it just beat a flurry of players into the right corner.

That killed off the game and a few more changes were made that brought some fresh energy to the team. One of the subs, Ciarmhac Smyth linked up well with Kalem Keane and a great through ball put Ciarmhac one-on-one with the keeper and he did well to slot the ball home. The game ended 4-0 to Midleton and the whole team deserve a lot of credit for some excellent play. This week there are two players who deserve to be 'Man of the Match' with Kalem Keane, who continues to scare defences every week with his dribbling skills and Phelim Magan who had a great game at centre half and ensured a clean sheet for the team.

Team: Jason Gray, Godwin Ojelabi, Phelim Magan, Kelly Abdullah, Luke Hourigan, Keith Cleary, Ola Wahab, Kalem Keane, James O'Sullivan, Craig Collins, Josh Cope. SUBS: Ciarmhac Smyth, Colin Sunderland, Conan Hickey, Eoin O'Doherty and Rowan Harte.

League at South Douglas Road V Tramore Athletic on Saturday 22nd November 2014
Tramore Athletic 2 Midleton 2

In a pulsating game Midleton took control and deservedly won a penalty to go 1 up at half time. The second started off the same and a great ball from James O'Sullivan set up Kalem Keane for a cool finish under pressure.

Subs made by both sides changed the game and Tramore fought back to 2-1 with 5 minutes to go. However, the game had a lot of extra time, with over 7 minutes played which was hard to understand. Eventually, Tramore Athletic were awarded a penalty after a 50-50 tackle in the box and once the penalty was scored the final whistle was blown. Our lads were both bemused and shocked at the final outcome. However, it is a sign of how far they have come that a 2-2 draw away from home is seen as a disappointment.

They deserve a lot of credit for how they played and no doubt will learn from the experience.

League at Knockgriffin V Avondale A on Sunday 9th November 2014
Avondale A 2 Midleton 0

Midleton gave a performance that was much better than the result with the U12a team showing that they can compete with the best. On a very muddy pitch there was little chance of any passing on the ground and Avondale, who are league leaders, made use of the wind in their favour and hit high balls into the box. In the first 20 minutes they scored their two goals from this method, one a good header from a free kick and the other a 50-50 challenge with our keeper that luck took their way.

The rest of the first half was even with no clear chances for either side. In the second half Midleton took hold of the game and dominated in every area. Ciarmhac Smyth, James O'Sullivan, Fintan Greenwood, Kamil Michalak, and keith Cleary all had chances and it was only last gasp tackles and some good goal keeping from Avondale that stopped us scoring.

The Midleton subs came on and added more strength and fresh legs to the game and we continued to push for an opening. Unfortunately the Avondale defence was strong and the game ended 2-0. The boys should be really proud of their efforts and it is a sign of their improvement that they played so well against the league leaders.

Team: Reuben Fashola, Ben Lowen, Rory Hartnett, Fintan Greenwood, Aaron Smyth, Keith Cleary, Kalem Keane, Ciarmhac Smyth, Luke Hourigan, James O'Sullivan, Colin Sunderlan. SUBS: Fawaz Bakinson, Conor Clark, Phelim Magan, Mubaraq Awobimpe and Kamil Michalak.

League at Blarney V Blarney on Sunday 12th October 2014
Blarney 0 Midleton 6

On another hot Sunday morning the team travelled away to Blarney Utd. With no goalkeeper, Godwin Ojelabi volunteered to step in and played really well. In the first half Blarney put up a strong fight and did not give us many opportunities. However, with a minute left in the first half Conan Hickey played a great pass through to Kalem Keane who finished well for the first of his hat-trick.

After the break, Midleton started really well and on 40 mins a free kick from Keith Cleary was flicked on by Keane for his second. A few minutes later Conan Hickey picked up a ball after some great defensive work from Ben Lowen to run the field and slot the ball home for his first. Hickey followed up with his second from the penalty spot after he was brought down in the box.

A few subs came on to liven things up and they all made great contributions to the team. On 50 minutes, James O\'Sullivan dribbled through the defence and after the ball was cleared James picked it up near the edge of the 18 yard box on the byline and curled the ball into the far corner of the net. Kalem Keane got his hat-trick on 60 minutes with another surging run and finish.

Overall all the lads played well and have shown they have the ability and team work to do well in this league. Man of the match was Conan Hickey. He scored two and set up another and overall his determination to run at the Blarney defence created lots of opportunities for the rest of the lads.

Team: Godwin Ojealbi, Ben Lowen, Chris O\'Riordan, Fintan Greenwood, Aaron Smyth, Keith Cleary, Kalem Keane, Ciarmhac Smyth, Conan Hickey, Kamil Michalak, Luke Hourigan. SUBS: Fawaz Bakinson, Josh Cope, Rowan Harte, Colin Sunderland and James O\'Sullivan

League at Mart Field V Passage on Saturday 21st September 2014
Passage 1 Midleton 1

On another hot Sunday morning the under 12a team had seven changes from our first game to allow for rotation in a 26 man squad. However, every player rose to the challenge and played fantastic to hold a strong Passage team to a 1-1 draw. In a very close first half the teams battled hard and it was only a high 20 yard shot from Passage that gave them the lead. At half time we had four changes to rest some players and the new additions worked just as hard. In the second half the Midleton boys set a great tempo and were rewarded when Conan Hickey took on the defence and was brought down inside the box. Kalem Keane took the penalty and slotted it into the bottom left.

Passage pushed on during the rest of the half and the Midleton boys had to work very hard for a well deserved point and 3rd place in the league after two games.Man of the match was Keith Cleary for tireless work in the midfield but all the boys should be proud of a real hard working display.

League at Ballyduff Park V Churchvilla on Sunday 7th September 2014
Churchvilla 4 Midleton 5

An early start on a very hot day set the scene for the first league match away to our neighbours Churchvilla. The match got off to a frenzied start with a goal apiece in the first 5 mins. The Midleton goal was a great solo effort by Kalem Keane who stormed up the left wing, beat three defenders and slotted the ball into the corner. This was typical of Kalem during the whole match and he was a constant threat and a great example to the rest of the team.

After 15 mins we got our second goal. Some great work on the wing from Kalem set up Keith Cleary for a well worked goal. We were playing some nice passing football at this stage in the game and a few minutes later Keith pounced on a clearance to fire a shot from almost the half-way line, the bounce beat the keeper and we were 3-1 up. Churchvilla fought back and got a second before half time.

The second half was end to end stuff and on 45mins we got our 4th goal. A superb run by Conan Hickey down the wing was finished well by James O\'Sullivan. The two goal lead did not last long with Churchvilla putting a lot of pressure on our defence with the high ball and they were rewarded with their third goal on 47mins. The Midleton defence had to work very in the last 15 mins and the team of Fintan Greenwood, Chris O\'Riordan, Ben Lowen, Godwin Ojelabi and Kelly Abdullah were excellent. With only two minutes left a rare mistake let Churchvilla in and they levelled the match at 4-4 against the run of play.

Midleton were not to be outdone and a break down the right side by Kalem Keane and Ciarmhac Smyth led to a corner. A great ball in by Kalem caused chaos in the defence and Ciarmhac was at the back post to score into the top corner.

The final whistle went and the boys celebrated a great start to the season. Kalem Keane was man of the match and showed a great attitude throughout the game.
