Under 13 2013/14 Division 1 Match Reports

League at home to Blarney United on Saturday 17th May 2014
Midleton 2 Blarney United 3
After a 7 week break from playing matches its not surprising that the lads were a little rusty. So much so that after 15 mins we allowed Blarney a 2 goal lead after a poorly defended corner and an unfortunately conceded penalty. Midleton never looked out of it and after a tremendous free kick from Eabhan de Barra it was 1-2 at the half.

More good work especially from Phillips and Carroll in midfield brought the equalizer when Craig Healy popped up with a trademark goal. All even and with only one team going to win the contest Midleton shot themselves in the foot, when more sloppy defending saw a Blarney cross unfortunately go in off a Magpie defender. F/T 2-3 Even with a seven week break there were still good performances out there, two boys who came on as subs Abdul Backinsdale and Niall Morgan did make a difference and Craig Healy in defense was on top form but man of the match went to our player of the season Richard Phillips.

League away to Douglas Hall on Saturday 22nd March 2014
Douglas Hall 4 Midleton 1
A league match that had to be replayed because of the wind was now taking place again in very windy conditions. Although not as bad as three wees ago the wind caused this to be "a game of two halves". Unfortunately for Midleton the lads from Douglas Hall controlled the wind better than us when three of the four first half goals were the direct results of long balls that fell kindly to the home team.h/t 4-0. A much closer performance in the second half saw our Magpies win the half 1-0 after Eabhan de Barra netted for Midleton. Again as against Corinthians in the last game Midleton showed great heart and effort but this time they got no reward. This now leaves the lads with us having to win all our remaining matches to win the league, a tall ask, but these lads show great spirit and determination so nothing would surprise me. Keep fighting lads.

League away to Corinthian Boys A on Saturday 15th March 2014
Corinthian Boys A 1 Midleton 2
Midleton were up against a very strong Corinthians team today. The Magpie defence had to be on their toes with the home team applying lots of pressure. In fact midway through the half they went a goal up. What was needed was an early reply and just 2 minutes later Craig Healy popped up with a screamer from 25 meters. H/T 1-1

Corinthians continued with some neat football and Midleton just were hanging on for long periods. After taking all that Corinthians had Midleton hit them with a delicate lobbed goal from Eabhan de Barra. Only 2 minutes were left in the game and no time for the home team to get past a dogged Midleton defence. An excellent performance from the team as a whole with all the defence getting the man of the match award.

League away to Buttevant on Saturday 22nd February 2014
Buttevant 4 Midleton 1
On a very heavy pitch with two teams battling for the league Midleton went unexpectedly  ahead in the first half with a good strike from Craig Healy. Buttevant battled, Midleton battled... it was a battle!!! H/T 0-1.
The second half carried on the same way only for Buttevant to edge the game. It was tough out there and Midleton should hold their heads high after this game

Local Cup at home to Churchvilla on Sunday 19th January 2014
Midleton 4 Churchvilla 0
A good run out for the Magpies saw them comfortable winners over a game Churchvilla team in the cup. Villa did not let Midleton have it all their own way in the first half until Patrik Kane stepped up with a good opening goal. Midleton kept on pressing but could not increase their lead. H/T 1-0.

No changes at half time saw more of the same with lots of pressure but no more goals. A double substitution seemed to change the match with Eabhan de Barra and Richard Phillips entering the fray. With the extra physical presence Midleton immediately scored with Craig Healy netting for the home team. Two further goals from Phillips sealed the win. Man of the match today was Patrik Kane, an all round excellent display capped with a goal. Nice game Patrik keep up the hard work as its paying off.

League at home to Tramore Athletic on Saturday 11th January 2014
Midleton 3 Tramore Athletic 1
On a heavy pitch Midleton made hard work to beat a gutsy Tramore team. After having the better of the opening fifteen minutes Midleton went into a deserved lead after a nice strike from John Carroll. Tramore got one back just before the break after a defensive mix up gifted the away team an equalizer. H/T 1-1

A much improved second half saw the Magpies dominate but without putting the ball in the net. Richard Phillips was very unlucky from a strike from 20 meters which clipped the post and nearly spun into the net. A surefire penalty shout after Jack Lamb skillfully beat his man only to be chopped down and amazingly the ref didn't give it. The breakthrough came after a lot of pressure when Eoghan Martin was on hand to slip the ball into an empty net, no more than Midleton deserved. A one goal lead is always dangerous and it took until the last five minutes to ensure all three points with the goal of the game from Eabhan de Barra, he chipped the keeper from 20 meters out with a cracking piece of skill. The man of the match today was from midfield, two players stood out from the rest. Richard Phillips and John Carroll were outstanding and have to be joint men of the match. We have yet to see a center midfield pairing anywhere as good as them two. Well done lads.

League away toAvondale United on Saturday 1st December 2013
Avondale United 0 Midleton 5

Back on track with a good solid display backed up with goals. Patrik Kane nicked the ball from the keeper and smashed the ball into the top of the net. Eabhan de Barra with a trademark left foot strike into the top of the net followed by a second long range effort.

H/T 0-3 The second half saw Nial Morgan bag two more well taken goals. Some really good performances out there from Richard Phillips, Paul Connaughton, Jack Lamb, John Carroll and Brendan Jalill. The man of the match goes to Richard Phillips our captain who led the team magnificently today. Well done Richard.

League away to Blarney United on Saturday 30th November 2013
Blarney United 3 Midleton 2

A game of two halves saw Midleton slip into a three goal deficit after some sloppy defending and good fortune from Blarney. H/T 3-0 A much better second half saw Midleton press Blarney and nearly they nearly pulled off a draw. Goals from a header from Ronan Hayes and a cracker from Patrik Kane came just too late with Blarney hanging on.

League at home to Buttevant on Saturday 2nd November 2013
Midleton 3 Buttevant 1
Buttevant came to Midleton in a top of the table clash at Knockgriffin Park today. A gale blowing did not help the twenty two players who put on a great show. Early on it was the visitors who made the most of the play, but Midleton gradually got into the game and had the chance of the half when Eabhan de Barra was unlucky not to score after he lobbed the keeper. At the other end Matthew O'Connor was in magnificent form in the Magpie goal he showed why he has just been called up to the Cork development squad putting on a fine display. H/T 0-0.

Conditions did not help the lads to play their usual style of football but the effort from them was 100%. The gale blowing seemed to be the deciding factor today when the visitors earned a free kick five meters outside the area. Take nothing away from the free taker it was a magnificent strike but with the wind behind the shot if flew into the net, nothing that the defense could do anything about. It was a day when hard graft and brave hearts were on show today and  the man of the match came from the defense. It could of been Matthew in goal but one player just edged him out and that was Jack Lamb. He blocked shots, did slide tackles, played some intelligent passes forward and never let the opposition get by him. Well done Jack, a really outstanding performance. F/T 0-1

League away to Tramore Athletic on Saturday 12th October 2013
Tramore Athletic 2 Midleton 4

A good performance from the team today at Tramore Park as Midleton got off to a flyer with Eabhan de Barra knocking in his usual goal on 13 minutes. A second for the striker was to follow after a lovely pass from Paul Connaughton. Two more goals to follow with de Barra notching his hat-trick and Abdul Backinson netting his first goal for the Magpies. Tramore fought back but never looked like troubling Midleton who controlled the midfield where Richard Phillips was majestic. His tackling, passing and drive were a joy to watch. Other players who played well on the day were Jack Lamb who was a rock in defence, Samuel Quirke who did so much work and Brendan Jalill who partnered Christian Murphy in defence. That pairing has to be as good as any in the league. Today's man of the match goes to Richard, although Eabhan scored three Richard just edged out the striker. Excellent performance Richard. F/T 2-4

National Cup at home to Carrigaline United on Saturday 5th October 2013
Midleton 0 Carrigaline United 4
The result did not do justice to the performance. No complaints about the outcome but there was never a difference of four goals in the teams. A very tight first half, as was the whole game, ended with a goal for the visitors on the stroke of half time. Not many chances for either team when Carrigaline nipped in to put them one up. H/T 0-1.

The second half was similar and the next goal was the most important of the game, unfortunately for the home team Matthew O'Connor was beaten by a high shot to the top of the net. 0-2. There was a lot of effort from Midleton but some days the ball does not run for you and this was one of those days. Carrigaline scored a third and then from a penalty brilliantly saved by the keeper only for the striker to get first to the rebound and bury the ball in the net. F/T 0-4.

No complaints from the managers about the effort today with good performances from Brendan Jalill, John Carroll, Paul Connaughton and Richard Phillips. Midleton's man of the match went to Samuel Quirke who was outstanding in midfield today.

League at home to Corinthians A on Saturday 21st September 2013
Midleton 3 Corinthians A 2
In an entertaining game the Magpies just edged past a good Corinthians team. A fairly even first half with neither team putting too much pressure on either goal was broken when Corrs broke down the right and managed to get in a cross which was well finished by the centre forward, 0-1. Midleton pressed on and were rewarded with a goal from Sam O'Reilly who was first to react in a scramble to poke home the equalizer, 1-1. Further pressure put the East Cork team in the lead when Eabhan de Barra turned his man well and slotted it past the Corrs keeper. What a time to score as the ref blew up straight away for half time. H/T 2-1.

There was more drama to come in this game with the temperature rising and the football sizzling. A long hopeful ball from the halfway line was not dealt with by Midleton when goalkeeper and defenders left the ball for the Corinthians striker to slot home an easy goal. The goal of the day to win the three points for Midleton was a gem from de Barra. He twisted, turned and swivelled and clipped a most beautiful shot curling into the top corner of the net for the winner. A goal that was fitting to win any game. Like in the first half once the ball was in the net the referee blew up for full time. F/T 3-2.

The man of the match was between three players, Christian Murphy who was a giant in defence, Samuel Quirke who bossed the midfield and de Barra the two goal hero. Today Murphy just edged the vote with a never say die effort in keeping Corinthians at bay. Cracking game Christian, keep it going.

League away to Kilreen Celtic on Saturday 14th September 2013
Kilreen Celtic 4 Midleton 5

A game that had all the drama you need. Midleton off to a flyer after 5 minutes with Richard Phillips scoring his first of four first half goals. Great work from Craig Healy in providing Phillips with a couple of opportunities, on the other flank Christopher O'Connor was on fire giving the Kilreen defenders nightmares. We went in at the half 4-1 up but it could have been more with Richard narrowly missing the target a couple more times. H/T 1-4

Kilreen did not lie down and with some neat midfield play they fought their way back into the game to incredibly tie the game at 4-4. The Magpies with their backs to the wall still kept on pressing and were unlucky not to score themselves. The breakthrough came from another fantastic corner from Eabhan de Barra who put in a beauty. Leo Hennessy latched onto it and headed it into the net. Nervous times were still ahead and after 3 minutes of time added on the ref finally blew for full time. F/T 4-5

The man of the match today was between Christopher O'Connor and Richard Phillips. Both played superb today. Richard has to edge it after a fantastic first half haul of four goals. Not only his goal scoring but he dropped back into midfield and helped the team to stop Kilreen in their tracks. Great game Richard.

League at home to Avondale United on Saturday 7th September 2013
Midleton 4 Avondale United 1

The opening game of the new season saw Midleton run out clear winners over a gutsy Avondale team. It was the usual Midleton performance, creating chance after chance without scoring, until Ronan Hayes in at centre forward popped up to open with the seasons first goal. Although Ronan scored, the performance of the half came from the left wing wizard Eoghan Martin, he created chance after chance for Ronan and strike partner Sam O'Reilly. H/T 1-0.

Juice and Jaffa cakes consumed during the break seemed to spark the boys into a goal frenzy, with O'Reilly running full pelt onto a through ball then smashing it into the roof of the net. Further chances came with Craig Healy being cheated by the post with a lovely little header and John Carroll coming close also. The goal of the day was not a spectacular effort but scored by Hayes for his second of the day when he never gave up a lost cause and poked home a real goal poaches goal. Managers love them goals. Hayes wrapped up things with his hat-trick goal with ten minutes to go.

Thanks have to be given to the U12 lads who more than helped out on the day when we were missing first team players. Leo Hennessy worked his socks off, Dylan O'Halloran worked their left back all the game, Robbie Treacy along with Neil Cunningham both very solid at the back. It was a quiet day for our defenders with Jack Lamb and Brendan Jallil both super cool in defense and with what little our “Captain” and keeper Matthew O'Connor had to do, it was done with style.
Today's man of the match goes to the hat trick hero Ronan Hayes. Top class performance from a top class boy.
