Under 16 Division 1 2012/13 Match Reports

League away to Everton on Tuesday 14th May 2013
Everton 1
Midleton 2
Our final game of the season and despite putting in another good display Everton got the better of us this time. We scored inside a minute Dylan Casey crossing for Conor Fitzgerald to finish well with a good header at the back post. The remainder of the half saw both defences well on top with very few chances, just as it seemed we would get to half-time 2mins into injury time Everton were awarded a soft penalty which they converted.

Second half and Everton scored inside 5 mins to take the lead with a well worked goal, we kept pushing but again both defences were doing well with James Leahy going close for us with their keeper making a good save, and Jack Enright making one fine save as Everton saw out the game to win 2-1. Our season is finished in 4th place in the league as the boys move on to U17 next season and we wish them well.

League at home to Everton on Tuesday 7th May 2013
Midleton 4 Everton 1

Our final home game of the season and we put in a real gritty team performance to eventually blow Everton away. The game started off tight with both teams probing and on 18mins Everton were awarded a soft penalty. Cometh the hour and Jack Enright pulled off a great save, this seemed to spur us on and John Looney went close on 24mins before he released Conor Fitzgerald and he finished well to make it 1nil. We were now starting to play and a Kyle McCarthy free was spilled by the keeper and Seadnaidh Smyth was there to make it 2nil on 34min. Half time 2-0.

Second half and we got off to the worst start conceding a soft goal after 30seconds to let Everton back into the game. Everton tried to push on but with Ryan Denny and Dan Creedon again in fine form we started to settle again. It was then our turn to be awarded a penalty on 48mins which Conor dispatched to make it 3-1. We were now buzzing with full backs Aaron Butler and Cormac Lynch supporting Killian Browne and Dylan Casey number four arrived on 66mins as a great move saw John cross to Conor who slotted to complete his hat-trick and make it 4-1. Everton cause was not helped by having a man send off and we had a few more chances to increase our lead by the game finished with a comfortable win.

For Jack in goal to Conor in attack the lads put in a great shift today and did themselves proud we now finish our season with a return game against Everton Tuesday week.

1. Jack Enright 2. Aaron Butler3. Cormac Lynch 4. Dan Creedon 5. Ryan Denny 6. Seadnaidh Smyth 7. John Looney 8. Kyle McCarthy 9. Conor Fitzgerald 10. Dylan Casey 11. Killian Browne 12. Ross Cummins  13. Jack Winckworth 14. Garan Manley

League away to Leeside on Sunday 5th May 2013
Leeside 1 Midleton 0

Away to Leeside where we needed a win to keep our promotion hopes alive but a game where two defences were well on top we lost our to the dreaded 1nil defeat. We started well with Killian Browne testing the keeper from 20 yards before Kyle McCarthy had the best chance of the half as he hit over from eight yards after a good pull back by Conor Fitzgerald. We then lost James Leahy with a twisted ankle and his drive and determination was badly missed for the rest of the game. We kept pressing but could not break through as again our stand in keeper Jack Enright had little to do as our defence led by Ryan Denny and Dan Creedon were in good form.

Second half saw Leeside play with the breeze but again we started well and Killian's great shot hit the bar and bounced clear. The defining moment then arrived on 58mins as Leeside's centre back drive out from defence played a one-two and finshed well to make it one nil. We kept trying but could not get that one chance we needed as Leeside held on to win. Best of luck to them for the rest of the season. For us we finish off with two matches against Everton which could decide where the league title goes.

1. Jack Enright 2. Ross Cummins 3. Aaron Butler 4. Dan Creedon 5. Ryan Denny 6. James Leahy 7. John Looney 8. Kyle McCarthy 9. Conor Fitzgerald 10. Dylan Casey 11. Killian Browne 12. Cormac Lynch 13. Ryan O'Reagan

League at home to Anondale United on Friday 2nd May 2013
Midleton 3 Anondale United 0

Our first of three games in five days as we overcame Avondale. We started off well and took the lead on 7mins as a nice pass by Killian Browne released Kyle McCarthy who finished well. Our second arrived on 18mins as Conor Fitzgerald was tripped in the box and he duly dispatched the penalty to make it 2nil. We had a few half chances with Aaron Butler going the closest on two occasions but our stand in goal keeper Jack Enright was rarely troubled. We wish regular keeper Cein O'Driscoll well as he recovers from a broken thumb.

Second half saw us huff and puff for long periods but we could not find the killer touch or pass as again Avondale did little to trouble us. We eventually got the third on 75mins as Kyle's shot was parried by the keeper but sub Jack Winckworth followed up to make it 3nil. He then went close on two occasions as we saw out the goal for a comfortable win.

1. Jack Enright 2. Ross Cummins 3. Cormac Lynch  4. Daniel Creedon 5. Ryan Denny 6. James Leahy
7.  Dylan Casey8. Kyle McCarthy 9. Conor Fitzgerald 10. Aaron Butler 11. Killian Browne 12. Jack Winckworth 13. Cathal Martin

League at home to Greenwood on Sunday 21st April 2013
Midleton 1 Greenwood 0

Our first league game at home this year and we managed to get a win without being at our best. Playing with the slight breeze in the first half we enjoyed the better possession but found Greenwood hard to break down. Our first chance came on 28mins with Conor Fitzgerald pulling his shot wide before a good move saw John Looney go close. Our defence with Ryan Denny and Seadnaidh Smyth in fine form was giving nothing away. We kept pressing and on the stoke of half time a looping header by Conor found the back of the net to make it one nil at half time.

Second half saw both defences on top with chances hard to find John again going close on 45min as we saw out the game without Cein O'Driscoll in goal having a save to make. For today Ryan and Seadnaidh were in great form at the back and Conor does what any good striker does and scored the only goal to secure the win. With four games to go we still have plenty to play for to see who wins the league.

1. Cein O'Driscoll 2. Aaron Butler 3. Ross Cummins 4. Seadnaidh Smyth 5. Ryan Denny 6. James Leahy
7. John Looney 8. Kyle McCarthy 9. Conor Fitzgerald 10. Daniel Creedon 11. Killian Browne
12. Jack Winckworth 13. Dylan Casey 14. Cormac Lynch

Local Cup at home to Everton on Sunday 7th April 2013
Midleton 2 Everton 2
(Lost on penatlies)
Home for the first time this year and although we put in a fine performance we went out on the dreaded penalty shootout. We started well and took the lead on 8mins as a slick move saw Conor Fitzgerald cross to James Leahy who finished well. Our backline was in great form closing down any attacks as Everton were hurried and chased all over the park, we had a couple of more chances as Jack Enright, Kyle McCarthy, John Looney and Conor all went close before we got our second on the stroke of half time. A corner was pulled back by Ryan Denny to Jack who slotted the ball away. With injury time being played we then conceded a penalty which was slotted away to make it 2-1 at half time.

Second half, playing against the wind which seemed to pick as the game progressed we dug in with every single player giving their all, we defended brillantly with Cein O'Driscoll in goals making one good save but otherwise having little to do as time ran out. Then on 73mins a corner led to their equaliser as it was bundled in at the back post.

Extra time came with very few chances for either side to win the game Conor going close in the first period with their keeper pulling off a fine save.

It then came down to penalties as their keeper saved a couple to give them the win. It was very cruel on our lads but that is sport and we must pick ourselves up and move on to finish our league campaign. For today I cannot single out any single player as everyone of them played their heart out for the team.

1. Cein O'Driscoll 2. Aaron Butler 3. Seadnaidh Smyth 4. Daniel Creedon 5. Ryan Denny 6. James Leahy 7. John Looney 8. Kyle McCarthy 9. Conor Fitzgerald 10. Jack Enright 11. Killian Browne 12. Jack Winckworth 13. Ross Cummins 14. Cormac Lynch

League away to St Mary's on Sunday 3rd March 2013
St Mary's 0 Midleton 3

Away again and we came away with a hard fought win. On a very hard pitch flowing football was hard to come by in the first half as St Mary's really took the game to us. Playing against the wind we find it difficult to string our passing game together and it took a tremendous double save from Cein O'Driscoll on 16mins to save us from going behind. After 20mins we changed our formation and this seemed to help as we gradually got going and on 38mins a pass by Kyle McCarthy released Conor Fitzgerald who finished well to see us led 1nil at half time.

Second half we played much better and on 44mins a corner from Kyle was met by Jack Enright at the near post to make it 2nil. St Mary's kept pushing and Cein had to make another good save before we pushed on again. All four subs were now on with Dan Creedon making a good impact and on 68mins his pass released Conor who finished well to make it 3nil. We kept pushing and Jack Winckworth was unlucky to see his goal disallowed before the ref blew for full time.

Good to get a game and a win with good displays from Cormac Lynch and Conor Fitzgerald but just shading them both for MOM was Cein O'Driscoll for some outstanding saves.

1. Cein O'Driscoll 2. Ross Cummins 3. Cormac Lynch 4. Seadnaidh Smyth 5. Ryan Denny 6. James Leahy 7. John Looney 8. Kyle McCarthy 9. Conor Fitzgerald 10. Jack Enright11. Dylan Casey 12. Dan Creedon 13. Killian Browne 14. Jack Winckworth 15. David Murphy

League away to Ballincollig on Sunday 3rd February 2013
Ballincollig 3 Midleton 3

Away to league leaders Ballincollig a game we could have won then lost but came out with a draw in the end. We started off very well and were a goal to the good inside five minutes when John Looney released James Leahy who finished with a great strike from 25 yards. Kyle McCarthy and John then had good shots saved by the keeper before a great move saw John just pull the ball wide on 11mins. Ballincollig then slowly worked their way back into the game and a terrific save by Cein O'Driscoll and follow up tackle by Ryan Denny saw us preserve our lead. Conor Fitzgerald then went close to extending our lead before the half time whistle blew.

Second half and we got off to a great start as another good move saw James cross to Dylan Casey to finish to make it 2nil on 41mins. We looked well in control and then suffered a crazy ten minute spell as first the ref awarded a penalty against us on 48mins 2-1, then some sloppy defending from a free kick saw them draw level on 50mins before their took the lead on 58mins. Fair dues to our lads as we then had wave after wave of attacks but just as it looked like being one of those days up popped John from a corner to continue his fine run of the scoring with a deserved equaliser on 77mins.

A shame we could not get the win but we showed good character to draw the game in the end. Standout display this week was from James Leahy who showed a great attitude throughout the game, well done James.

1. Cein O'Driscoll 2. Aaron Butler 3. Cormac Lynch 4. Seadnaidh Smyth 5. Ryan Denny 6. James Leahy
7. John Looney 8. Kyle McCarthy 9. Conor Fitzgerald 10. Killian Browne 11. Dylan Casey
12. Ross Cummins 13. Jack Winckworth

Challenge away to Tramore on Saturday 19th January 2013
Tramore 0 Midleton 5

A challenge match against Premier opposition and we put in a masterclass performance. Right from the off we took the game to Tramore and opened our account on 10mins with a sweet left foot finish by James Leahy, again our midfield three of James, Kyle McCarthy and John Looney were in fine form. Our second arrived on 25mins when a quick one-two between Dylan Casey and John saw John finish well. We continued to play good football with Joe Wyer in goal again rarely troubled as Seadnaidh Smyth and Ryan Denny were in mean form at the back.

Second half and we got off to a great start as another good move saw John make it three nil, this really knocked the stuffing out of Tramore as both John and Jack Enright who had a fine game went close before Conor Fitzgerald made it 4nil on 65mins. We kept playing as John was rewarded for his excellent display as he rounded the keeper to complete his hat-trick and make it 5nil. A real positive performance from all the players with John Looney having his best display of the season with a hat-trick to boot.

1. Joe Wyer 2. Ross Cummins 3. Cormac Lynch 4. Seadnaidh Smyth 5. Ryan Denny 6. James Leahy
7. John Looney 8. Kyle McCarthy 9. Conor Fitzgerald 10. Jack Enright 11. Dylan Casey 12. Dan Creedon
13. Dave Murphy

League away to Douglas Hall on Sunday 6th January 2013
Douglas Hall 1 Midleton 2

We started 2013 with another win with a good overall performance away to Douglas Hall. Playing against the strong breeze we started off really well playing some great football and took the lead on 15mins with a great strike from James Leahy from the edge of the box. Number two arrived on 20mins when a smart move saw Conor Fitzgerald square the ball to John Looney who finished well to the bottom corner. We were then unlucky not to have number three when another move down the right saw James square the ball to Conor but his shot hit the bar and was cleared. We reached half time well in control at 2nil.

Second half saw Douglas come out strong for the first ten minutes but we weathered the storm and gradually got back on top, a diagonal ball by Killian Browne saw John just lift the ball over the bar. Another flowing move again saw the ball reach John but his strike just drifted wide. Then a corner on 58mins saw John just head over, before Douglas got back in the game as ill discipline saw us go down to 10 men and their pulled back a goal on 66mins. They kept pushing for the final 15mins but with the defence standing firm we saw out the game to secure the points.

Good to start the New Year with a win playing some good football at times with standout displays from the midfield three of John Looney Kyle McCarthy and James Leahy.

1. Cein O'Driscoll 2. Aaron Butler 3. Seadnaidh Smyth 4. Ryan Denny 5. Dan Creedon 6. James Leahy
7. John Looney 8. Kyle McCarthy 9. Conor Fitzgerald 10. Killian Browne 11. Dylan Casey 12. Jack Winckworth 13. Ross Cummins 14. Cormac Lynch 15. Jack Enright

League at home to Corinthian Boys on Sunday 16th December 2012
Midleton 3
Corinthian Boys 1
Another 3-1 win with a strong second half performance to see us home. We started off really well playing some great football and were rewarded on ten mins when Conor Fitzgerald released John Looney who lobbed the keeper to make it one nil. We then backed off and let them back in the game culminating in a harsh penalty to see them draw level. We got going again in the last ten minutes of the half with Aaron Butler and James Leahy linking well down the right.

Second half saw a much better display, as right from the off we pushed then back, and on 45mins a good run down the left by Seadnaidh Smyth saw Dylan Casey lay the ball into the path of Kyle McCarthy from 25 yards out he dispatched it to the net. We keep pushing and Killian Browne saw his shot come back off the post before Conor made it 3-1 with a smart finish after a mix up in their defence. We keep pushing for a fourth but could not get it as we saw out the game to move up to third in the league.
Another win playing some good football at times with displays from James Leahy, Kyle McCarthy and Aaron Butler.

1. Cein O'Driscoll 2. Aaron Butler 3. Cormac Lynch 4. Ryan Denny 5. Dan Creedon 6. James Leahy 7. John Looney 8. Kyle McCarthy 9. Conor Fitzgerald 10. Seadnaidh Smyth 11. Garan Manley 12. Jack Winckworth 13. Ross Cummins 14. Killian Browne 15. Jack Enright 16. Dylan Casey

League away to Watergrasshill United on Sunday 9th December 2012
Watergrasshill United 1 Midleton 3

A well deserved win over a strong Hill team with some quality goals. As we usually with our visits to the Hill we had to come from behind conceding after a minute after poor defending saw a cross finished at the back post. Our response was instant with Kyle McCarthy turning and finishing with real style on 3mins. We gradually started to get on top with Seadnaidh Smyth had a great game at centre field and the defence tightening up we took the lead on 32mins a deft pass by Kyle released Aaron Butler who precise cross reached Conor Fitzgerald who finished with a fine header. He could have made it three on 35min but for the keeper making a fine save but number three did arrive on 36mins a good move saw James Leahy's cross diverted into the net by a Hill defender to make it 3-1 at the break.

Second half was real end to end stuff but with Dan Creedon and Ryan Denny playing well at the back we were not giving away to many clear cut chances. On the break we had several chances Conor twice unlucky not to score and then John Looney unlucky with a header on 56mins. Sub Jack Winckworth then burst threw only to see the keeper make another good save. The Hill kept pressing and Cein O'Driscoll had to be alert to on several occasions but we kept breaking Jack going close again before Jack Enright had the last chance on 80mins when his shot just went over. Great to get a win with a a real hard working team display and all five subs getting good game time and making an impact.

1. Cein O'Driscoll 2. Aaron Butler 3. Ross Cummins 4. Ryan Denny 5. Dan Creedon 6. James Leahy 7. John Looney 8. Kyle McCarthy 9. Conor Fitzgerald 10. Seadnaidh Smyth 11. Dylan Casey 12. Jack Winckworth 13. Cormac Lynch 14. Killian Browne 15. Jack Enright 16. Garan Manley

League at home to Leeside on Sunday 18th November 2012
Midleton 1 Leeside 1

Our fourth draw of the season as we came from behind to secure a well earned draw. We knew Leeside were playing well and we came up against a well organised team, we started well enjoying most of the possession when Leeside scored on 11mins with a good strike from 30 yards. Back we came and Killian Browne saw his shot stopped on the line before a teasing Dylan Casey cross went inches wide as we pressed Leeside back. There was a tremendous battle going on between Ryan Denny and the Leeside striker (ex Midleton) as Leeside went route one but Ryan was up to the challenge as no quarter was asked or given. Kyle McCarthy and Seadnaidh Smyth were working very hard in midfield but fair dues to Leeside who were defending well as they went in one nil up at half-time.

Second half and we started to ring the changes to try and get back in the match. Jack Enright was first to make an impact as his header from a Kyle corner was headed off the line for another corner. This time though he again met the ball to draw as level on 60mins. We kept trying and John Looney glided through the defence only to pull his shot wide, Leeside were looking dangerous on the break but with the defence staying strong Cein O'Driscoll was only called into action on one occasion. We kept pushing as a Kyle free kick was met by Jack but we could not force the ball over the line as the game finished all square.

Another draw but a real hard working display lead by Kyle McCarthy, Seadnaidh Smyth and Ryan Denny.

1. Cein O'Driscoll 2. Aaron Butler 3. Ross Cummins 4. Ryan Denny 5. Dan Creedon 6. James Leahy 7. Killian Browne 8. Kyle McCarthy 9. Conor Fitzgerald 10. Seadnaidh Smyth 11. Dylan Casey 12. Jack Winckworth 13. Cormac Lynch 14. John Looney 15. Jack Enright 16. Garan Manley 17. David Murphy.

National Cup at home to Leeds on Sunday 11th November 2012
Midleton 8 Leeds 3

Unfortunately we bowed out of the National Cup to Premier Leaders Leeds who had that little bit extra craft and quality in the final third. We came in three nil down at half time but this was not a true reflection of our play. We started off well and were playing the better football when with Leeds first break they scored on eight mins. Back we came as a few chances came and went before we were hit with two sucker punches, we switched off for a short corner and were punished at the back post on 26mins. Four minutes later it was 3nil near as a cross we should have dealt better with was finished at the far post.

Second half we showed good spirit and play as we continued to take the game to Leeds, Conor Fitzgerald going close and then James Leahy just fizzing his shot wide after a great run by Seadnaidh Smyth. More chances came Jack Winckworth just over running the ball when clean through and then Kyle McCarthy with a free kick. Cein O'Driscoll had little to do second half with the defence led by Ryan Denny and Dan Creedon giving Leeds little space. Try as we might we could not get the goal our play deserved as Leeds saw out the game, we wish them well in the next round. For today disappointing to lose but Leeds are unbeaten this season, we showed with a little more craft we are not too far off, there were good displays from Kyle, Aaron, James and Ryan as we move back to our League fixtures.

League at home to St Mary's on Sunday 4th November 2012
Midleton 8 St Mary's 0

A scoreline we had been threatening finally arrived as we got the goals our play has deserved recently. It looked like being one of those days again as first James Leahy rounded the keeper but saw his shot blocked on the line and then Jack Enright saw the keeper make a good save on 5mins. Our first goal then arrived from a simple corner met by the head of Conor Fitzgerald on 8mins. James then got the goal he wanted as a fine pass by Kyle McCarthy saw him finish to the bottom corner. We kept pressing playing some delightful football Dylan Casey going close on 30mins before a one two with Jack saw him finish to make it three nil on 32mins. Half time 3-0.

Second half and the fourth goal arrived on 49mins as Aaron Butler\'s cross was finished well by Jack, he had a chance to make it five on 56min but just blasted over. It was all one way traffic now as the bench was emptied to give all the subs game time. Goal number five then arrived as Kyle finished with a great strike, then James with his second on 66mins as we looked like scoring with every attack. Aaron who had a fine game was then brought down on the edge of the box, Kyle\'s shot was saved by the keeper only for Dave Murphy to finish from 2 yards. There was still time for another flowing move which saw Killian Browne cross for Jack Winckworth to make it 8-nil.

Hopefully we can build on this, for today there were fine displays from Aaron Butler, Dylan Casey and Kyle McCarthy

1. Cein O'Driscoll 2. Aaron Butler 3. Cormac Lynch 4. Ryan Denny 5. Dan Creedon 6. James Leahy 7. Killian Browne 8. Kyle McCarthy 9. Conor Fitzgerald 10. Jack Enright 11. Dylan Casey 12. Jack Winckworth 13. David Murphy. 14. Ross Cummins 15. Seadnaidh Smyth

League away to Avondale United on Sunday 28th October 2012
Avondale United 1 Midleton 0

Groundhog day again in the league as we missed chance after chance only to see Avondale score the only goal with their only clear cut chance of the match.
First half we created chance after chance a great cross by Aaron Butler saw John Looney fail to connect cleanly from a few yards out. On 12 mins a free kick found Ryan Denny who shot hit the bar and with an open goal James Leahy could only hit the side netting. Next up was Dan Creedon as Kyle McCarthy's corner saw him head over from five yards. We keep pressing as Killian Browne and Conor Fitzgerald both went close. Then on 23mins a throw in on the half way line saw the Avondale striker race clear of a couple of defenders to score. Back we came as Kyle's free kick went just wide.

Second half and we pressed for the equaliser as we dominated possession, John went close with a great strike and then Kyle pulled the ball across the goal but nobody could get a touch. Then with 5mins left a ball across the box an open goal but Dylan Casey saw his header go over the bar, when it is not your day it is not your day. The lads were gutted again but we must move on to the next match as our luck we turn.

1. Cein O'Driscoll 2. Aaron Butler 3. Cormac Lynch 4. Ryan Denny 5. Dan Creedon 6. James Leahy 7. Killian Browne 8. Kyle McCarthy 9. Conor Fitzgerald 10. John Looney 11. Dylan Casey 12. Jack Winckworth 13. David Murphy.

National Cup away to Drinagh on Saturday 20th October 2012
Drinagh 1 Midleton 12

Away to Drinagh in the National Cup and we did not know what to expect, what we got was a very one sided game. From the first few minutes we could see that it was going to be a tough game for our opposition. On 3mins Ryan Denny had a goal disallowed from a corner when he looked onside, on 5 mins Kyle McCarthy hit the post and then Conor Fitzgerald hit over when well placed. The first goal arrived on 13mins as a short corner saw Kyle curl the ball over the keeper, second goal came on 17 mins as this time Killian Browne did the same. Goal number three was a minute later as Conor opened his account, on 22mins Killian's cross was headed into his own net by a defender. We returned the compliment by scoring an own goal ourselves to make it 4-1 on 25mins. Back we came and a cross by Killian was converted by John Looney before Kyle got his second with a fine strike from 25 yards. There was still time for Conor to lob the keeper to make it 7-1 at half time.

Second half was a short match for obvious reasons as first Conor got his hat-trick on 36mins before Dylan Casey made it 9-1 on 40mins with a clinical finish. John then got his second on 43mins before sub David Murphy made an immediate impact with two goals in two minutes as the game finished 12-1 to us. Good to get amongst the goals today but tougher outing next time in this competition as we will meet Premier Leaders Leeds in the next round.

League at home to Ballincollig on Sunday 14th October 2012
Midleton 2 Ballincollig 3

Its a cruel game when you play so well and even the opposition manager has sympathy for you but that's the way it turned out as a last minute goal handed us our first defeat of the season.

First half was all us as we created chance after chance a great cross by James Leahy was met by Conor Fitzgerald but the keeper pulled off a fine save. The same combination combined again but Conor just pulled his shot wide, on 12 mins Conor again made the keeper work. On 14mins Kyle McCarthy's corner was met by Ryan Denny but again a fine save from the keeper prevented us taking the lead. We kept going with Aaron Butler on his first appearance of the season having a fine game releasing James whose shot just went wide. On 39mins from Ballincollig's only attack a cross was not cut out hit one of our defender's and went in, back we came and within a minute we were level through Conor after another good move.

Second half and we dominated possession again and on 57mins took the lead through Kyle from a free kick inside the box. We went looking for the third and John Looney was unlucky not to find the target with a header. From our possession we lost the ball and Cein O'Driscoll made a fine save which resulted in a corner. From the corner again how unlucky can you be as the defender's header hit the back of his own defender and looped back into the net another own goal and 2-2 on 65mins. Just as the game looked like ending in a draw from our own kick out we allowed the Ballincollig centre back to travel all the way to the edge of the box, a free kick was given which he dispatched to the corner, 3-2 down with a minute to play game over.

The lads were gutted after playing so well and getting nothing but that is life, we will need to pick ourselves up and move on, as our luck we turn. For today there were many good displays from James Leahy, Kyle McCarthy and Aaron Butler.

League away to Greenwood on Sunday 7th October 2012
Greenwood 2 Midleton 2

A game we controlled for long periods but ended up with only a point to show for it. First half we played our best football of the season for the first 25mins as it was all one way traffic. On 10mins a sweeping move saw John Looney cross to James Leahy who narrowly headed wide before Kyle McCarthy went close with a dipping shot. It was only a matter of time and on 13mins Killian Browne opened our account with a dipping shot. Five minutes later it was two nil as Conor Fitzgerald turned and beat the keeper from 20 yards out. We keep pressing and John went close before out of the blue the Greenwood striker beat two defenders and scored with a low shot to the corner. Half time 2-1.

Second half could not have started worse for us, from the kick off we were asleep as Greenwood scored within 17seconds to level the game. This seemed to wake us up as we took control of the game with John going close on 50mins before Garan Manley was just off target with a fizzing shot. Both teams tried for the winner but the game ended 2-2.
A pity to draw as the first half performance was excellent with Killian, Kyle and John all playing well, second half saw us tail off a bit but Killian we just shade MOM this week.

League at home to Douglas Hall on Sunday 23rd Septmebr 2012
Middleton 0 Douglas Hall 0

A difficult game for us as we went into it without our recognised centre backs who were injured but the lads who came in did really well. First half was nip and tuck with a few half chances we were playing well out from the back and midfield but could not penetrate the Douglas defence who were defending well. Kyle McCarthy went close on two occasions with a free kick and a long range shot which just flew over. The new centre back combination of China Igboanusi and Jack Enright were defending well with both full backs Ross Cummins and Cormac Lynch having their best games of the season. Half time 0-0.

Second half and we were pushed back for the first twenty minutes, we introduced John Looney for his first game of the season and we got back into the game. Again a few half chances came and went for both sides but with both defences on top the game finished at 0-0. Although the lads were disappointed it was a good display much improved on last week as we tried to play our passing game. For today Jack Enright who had to play at centre back due to our injuries put in a fine display to earn MOM for this week. Next week we play the first round of National cup.

League away to Corinthian Boys on Sunday 16th September 2012
Corinthian Boys 2 Midleton 2

A game we could have lost but we snatched a draw in the end. We started off very poorly and the first half never really got going for us but for Seadnaidh Smyth and Ryan Denny it could have been much worse than the one goal we conceded on 30mins as we went in one down at the break.

Second half and we introduced Garan Manley and Dan Creedon and started to play a lot better as we moved the ball around quicker. Conor Fitzgerald went close first before we introduced subs Stephen Roe and Jack Winckworth who combined as Jack shot over. We kept pressing and on 64mins a floated corner by Kyle McCarthy was met by a towering header by Garan to make it 1-1. We looked like we would go on but a slick move saw Corinthian go 2-1 up on 74mins before Cein O'Driscoll pulled off a stunning save to keep us in the game. Back we came and with time running out Kyle drilled a free kick was pushed out by the keeper to the on rushing Garan to make it 2-2.

A good draw in the circumstances with work to be done in training in the weeks ahead. For today again the subs made a good impact with Garan's two goals being the difference between defeat and a draw.

League at home to Watergrasshill United on Sunday 9th September 2012
Midleton 5 Watergrasshill United 1

First game of the new season and we eventually saw off a stubborn Hill team in the last twenty minutes. We started off really well with Kyle McCarthy controlling the midfield on 12mins a slick move down the left saw Conor Fitzgerald release Jack Enright who crossed for James Leahy to open our account. Hill aided by the strong wind came more into the game as the first half progressed but with new keeper Cein O'Driscoll making a strong impression we made it to half time one nil to the good.

Second half and we really should have made the game safe within the first 15mins as first Killian Browne played in Conor who shot was pushed over by the keeper before Jack Enright shot over when clean through. We were then punished on 55mins from a corner when the Hill equalised through a header. We introduced Seadnaidh Smyth, Stephen Roe and Jack Winckworth and all three made a good impression as we pushed for the win. On 68mins we took the lead again when Kyle's free kick went all the way to the net, and we quickly followed this up when Wincky's cross was finished off by Conor. We were now in the driving seat with Stephen linking well with Kyle, Conor made it 4-1 before Seadnaidh finished them off. A surging run saw him felled in the box, a penalty he picked himself up and smashed the ball to the net to finish the game.

A good start to the season with all 15 players on the day making a good contribution to the victory, well done lads.
