Senior's 2012/13 Match Reports

Senior Cup at home to Crofton Celtic  on Friday 22nd February 2013
Midleton 2 Crofton Celtic 1

After going one down in first half Midleton continued to pass and probe, but unfortunately where finding it hard to get that opener, one because of good defending by the visitors and also a inspired goalkeeper.ht 1-0

Second half began with much more purpose to the magpies game with a change of formation, Magpies began to dominate possession in midfield, and were able to get key attacking players into the game. Jamie Murphy, Dave Stack, Andrew Knowles all linking well and going close on a number of occasions, Magpies finally got the opener on the hour with a great delivery from Dave stack from a free, for Shane Geasely to smash home at the back post. Midleton kept on the ascendency and with nice neat intricate passing Crofton began to tire, and Midleton grabbed their deserved winner 10min from time with substitute Kelvin Kruschel latching on to a ball over the top to control on his chest and volley a sublime finish past the inspired Crofton goalkeeper on the night.

League away to Mayfield United on Saturday 15th December 2012
Mayfield 0 Midleton 1

Midleton travelled away to Mayfield and collected another three valuable points to end the year on a high. A game played in very heavy conditions and difficult to get good flowing football in the first half. Both defences cancelling each other out.

The second half Midleton started brightly and pressed forward on a number of occasions. Johnny Barrett who came on for Kelvin Krushel made a lovely run down the right side and his cross to Allan O'Flynn was controlled just on the edge of the box and he set up Stephen Bruton who struck a great goal into the top left hand corner of the net. Mayfield responded with a number of efforts to equalise but Midleton Defence held firm. A very good performance by Midleton who now look forward to a short break before the new year begins. Midleton Player Manager Anthony Wolfe was very pleased with the result and delighted for the team to finish on their last match of the year with a win before going into a short break over Christmas.

League away to UCC on Saturday 8th December 2012
UCC 2 Midleton 1

A game in which we started the stronger and could have being a few goals up, but as we all know if you don't take your chances the other team usually score. UCC scored on the stroke of half time and again in second half, we fought hard and scored with few min to go with good goal from Andrew Knowles who has hit 3 in 3 now. Away to mayfield next Sat.

League at home to St. Marys on Friday 23rd November 2012
Midleton 3 St. Marys 3

A game in which 2 very strong teams lined out and both needed a win for different reasons, Midleton would go top and Mary's would get off bottom of table. Both teams were very strong and it was Mary's who settled better and played better football and were unlucky not to be ahead. The game changer after 30 min when Emmet O'Hanlon was sent off for striking a Mary's player. We ralied and got into the game as half time approached.

Half time team talk was about making sure we were solid for first 15 min so just to make it hard we went 2 down, 2 very soft goals 1 direct from corner. The introduction of Dave Stack with 40min to go changed the game with Dave attacking pace down left wing had Mary's in the horrors. Dave's free kick was headed in by Gary Collins for his second of season . Midleton at this stage were all over marys and stacky run down left wing cross shot lead to Andrew Knowles with simple of finishes, Stacky wasn't finished yet a great thru ball to Alan O'Flynn saw his first shot saved, his next strike was goal bound till a defender stuck out a hand and got a deserved red with us a penalty and chance to lead 3-2. Alan slotted away the pen to huge cheers from watching crowd. But give Mary's credit they battled back again and scored late on to snatch a draw which to be fair was fair result.

League away to Fermoy on Sunday 18th November 2012
Fermoy 1 Midleton 3

Headed to Fermoy with 13 players suspensions and work robbed otu of full squad. The 13 players who all played were excellent on a tough pitch in a very hard place to win. The match started scrapy and Fermoy were better side for first 20 min could have being a few goals up. But with this Midleton team we have match winners and in Alan O'Flynn a striker at top of his game scored two excellent goals and was man of the match. Andrew Knowles also got off the mark for season which a very clever goal and well deserved. A massive 3 points for the magpies up next is St. Marys Fri night.

League at home to Douglas Hall on Friday 9th November 2012
Midleton 2 Douglas Hall 2

Back to league action, all action happened in first 25 min. Midleton went 1 up from a great move down left side with Manu laying ball back to taff (John Keane) to deliver a superb cross on Alan O'Flynn head, who in turn powered his header past keeper after 2 min. 2 min later Douglas Hall broke and scored a good goal. 6 min into game after a very poor challenge on Ian Maher which should have being red card, Ian reacted and shoved player in face leaving referee no decision only to send ian off. Midlelton dug in deep and too the lead when a free kick from Eddie Nolan found John Mallon who headed home. Douglas Hall responded well and scored from a slick move. The second half was a battle and we held on for a massive point which felt like 3 playing 84 min with 10 men next up is away to Fermoy Sunday morning.

Munster Cup at home to Douglas Hall on Friday 2nd November 2012
Midleton 1
Douglas Hall 2
After a disappointing exit in Intermediate losing 2-1 after extra to Blaney the previous week, this week was same story 2-1 defeat in extra time. Mistakes have crept into side which has cost us 2 weeks in a row, but lucky none of defeats have happened in league. Back to league action this week v Doulgas Hall in Midleton.

League at home to Avondale United on Friday 19th October 2012
Midleton 1
Avondale United 3
We came up against an exceptional Avondale team on the night and battled well but to no avai. After going a goal down we got back into game with an excellent move down the left hand side with Andrew Knolwes and Alan O'Flynn combining to cross for Killian Flavin to score in his final game before heading off to Australia. Avondale regained lead through a set piece and killed off game with a 25 yard shot which gave keeper Stephen Deasy no chance...
Intermediate cup Friday night at home to Blarney must win after 2 previous games ended in defeat.

Keane Cup at home to Corinthians on Saturday 13th October 2012
Everton 0 Midleton 1

On a cold Sat night both teams made changes and to be fair Corinthians were the better side and deserved there place in semi finals. Nothing seemed to come off for us on the night.
Next up is avondale Fri night.

League away to Everton on Sunday 7th October 2012
Everton 0 Midleton 1
A massive win for us in a very tight game in Everton park. Midleton started sluggish and first half was even game with Everton having 1 shot on target, Andrew Knowles made his first start of season after injury and did very well testing keeper in first half.

Couple of changes at half time and 53 min mark introducing Jordan O'Leary for Manu Midleton suddenly looked a threat up front, with us getting on top finally got break through in 88 min when Jordan was brought down just a he was about to strike on goal. He dusted himself down and tucked away the penalty very well into bottom corner. Next up is 1/4 final at home to Corinthians Sat night.

League away to Rockmount on Friday 14th September 2012
Rockmount 1 Midleton1

A draw was a fair result tonight at Rockmount Park in a game played at breathtaking pace. It was looking like Midleton were in prime position at the break with Alan O'Flynn's 20th minute goal separating the sides and few would argue that the visitors weren't deserving of their lead. However, Rockmount threw the proverbial kitchen sink at Midleton in the second half and when Gary O'Riordan equalised on 54 minutes you just felt there was only going to be one winner but Midleton rolled up their sleeves and despite the late sending off of goalscorer O'Flynn, they held on comfortably. The first 15 minutes was physical with referee, Ray Murphy having to get involved verbally after a couple of over zealous challenges but the first moment of real quality came with the goal when Rockmount failed to deal with a free-kick, Cormac Aherne was left with plenty of time and his pass found O'Flynn whose first time shot ws placed delightfully into the bottom corner beyond Mark Power. It was a deserved lead for Midleton as Rockmount struggled to reach their best but Midleton's own impressive displays all over the park were a significant factor in this. The petty arguing from both sides led to the game being stopped on a number of occasions but when there was quality in the first half it came from the visitors and Ray Barnes came close just after the half hour but his shot was straight at Power. Gareth Cambridge who was trying to make things happen for Rockmount eventually produced a delightful through ball on 43 minutes for Alan O'Connor and his delayed cross was almost turned home at the far post by Jason McGrath but Midleton cleared the danger to lead at the break.

Rockmount needed a reaction and they came flying out of the blocks in the second half with John Gaffney almost getting his head on the end of a Willie Byrne corner on 48 minutes. Up at the other end and Barnes tested Power again with a long range effort on 53 minutes but within a minute Rockmount worked the ball down the right side of the pitch and McGrath's cross to the near post was poked home by Gary O'Riordan to give Rockmount a dream start to the second half. Aherne, who was a real leader on the pitch for Midleton tonight almost gave his side the lead again in the 56th minute but his effort from Killian Flavin corner was deflected narrowly wide. Midleton made a few changes midway through the half and it certainly added pace to their side and it almost paid off in the 70th minute when O'Flynn could only look on in agony as his header back across the goal came back off the inside of the post. Cambridge was still looking the most likely for Rockmount and his powerful direct running led to him shooting over from distance in the 76th minute under severe pressure from a number of Midleton players. O'Flynn blotted his copybook with 12 minutes to go when he was given his marching orders for a late challenge on Kenneth Hoey but Midleton stood firm under the guidance of player/manager, Anthony Wolfe and a share of the spoils was fair in a game that failed to reach the high expectations pre-match.

Rockmount: Mark Power, Jason McGrath, Kenneth Hoey, Steven Montgomrie, Willie Byrne, John Gaffney, Cian Blake (Shane Hennessey 83 mins), Gareth Cambridge, Terry White, Gary O'Riordan, Alan O'Connor. Subs not used: Brendan O'Connell, Ian McConville, Dave Aherne, Gearoid O'Leary.

Midleton: Stephen Deasy, Eddie Nolan, Dave Stack, Gary Collins (John Mallon 64 mins), Anthony Wolfe, Cormac Aherne, Killian Flavin, Ray Barnes, Alan O'Flynn, Manuel Borais (John Barrett 63 mins), Kevin Horgan (Jordan O'Leary 54 mins). Subs not used: Emmet O'Hanlon and Seb Krawiec.

League at home to Mayfield United on Friday 7th Septmebr 2012
Midleton 3 Mayfield United 0

This is Midleton's 3rd year back in Premier division and have failed to win opening league game in last 2 seasons. The challenge set for players was 3 points on Fri night in a tough opening home game to a side that finished 3rd last year.

The game opened with Midleton being a bit tentative maybe the big crowd and opening day nerves were to blame, Mayfield were by far the better team in first half with there striker missing a easy chance to be fair, towards the end of first half Midleton started to get a grip on Mayfield's midfield with Cormac Aherne and Stephen Bruton working very hard.

Half time came and a nice relaxing team talk settled the players down. The second half performance from every Midleton player for outstanding totally dominated in every department with huge performances from Eddie Nolan, Anthony Wofl,e Gary Collins and Dave Stack at the back making sure we kept high up and pressed Mayfield back. A great through ball from Killian Flavin to Alan O'Flynny saw Flynny skip past defender and shoot low to bottom corner great finish from our number 9, his 3rd goal of season. Midleton did not sit back and try to hold on we smelt blood and continued our attacking football with the introduction of Ray Barnes we kept passing and probing looking for the opening. The second goal came was a touch lucky but to be fair THE HARDER YOU WORK THE LUCKIER YOU GET, and Kelvin Kruschel did not stop working for 90 min his cross was slightly miss hit and ended up in far top corner. Again Midleton pushed forward with Jonny Barret coming on for Manu who did very well again up top. Ian Maher came on to protect the back 4 and did his job perfectly. If Kelvin's 1st goal was touch lucky his second and our 3rd was quality from start to finish. A free kick in left back position Dave Stack was asked to pick out Cormac Aherne which he did with a laser like 50 yard cross field pass, Cormac headed ball to Kelvin who controlled with his chest before slotting ball into bottom corner, sparking wild celebrations from the bench. Midleton had so much of the ball in second half keeper Stephen Deasy didn't have save to make. All in all very very good second half and a massive win but its still only 3 points and next week away to Rockmount Friday night is another huge game.

Keane Cup v Bandon in Knockgriffn on Sunday 2nd September 2012
Midleton 2 Bandon 1

Midleton came into Sunday morning's game knowing they had to win to have a chance of a 1/4 final spot. After a heavy 10 days gym training with Train Station gym and playing Thurs night, a fast start was needed. Bandon started the better team and were ahead after 4 min with a well worked goal giving keeper Stephen Deasy no chance. Midelton eventually woke up and got into the game with some quick tempo passing out from the back creating space for midfield and strikers. Some great play from Alan O'Flynn down left wing and cutting into box delivering the ball for Manu (our brazilian striker) to waste a great chance to level the score. The goal eventually came just before half time Dave Stack delivered a great back post free kick, Gary Collins rose highest to guide ball back across the goal to the far corner.

Midleton were much better in second half and dominated with Manu being more involved with some great touches and excellent holding up of the ball. The winner was a strike that we have seen before from Alan in training and preseason games, picking the ball up 25 yards skipping past couple of players he unleashed a shot so powerful it was the the roof of the net before keeper even reacted.
Big week ahead with first league game home to Mayfield Fri night 7.30pm kick off.

Keane Cup v Ballincollig in Knockgriffn on Thursday 30th August 2012
Midleton 1 Ballincollig 0
First home game of season under lights its a new look senior team and played extremely well with free flowing attacking football. Midleton controlled game from start to finish Ballincollig failed to have shot on target. The tempo, workrate and quality was there for all to see with very good performances from Eddie Nolan, Emmet O'Hanlon, Alan O'Flynn and Dave Stack. Alan O'Flynn was a constant threat upfront and work well with Johhny Barrett. Also evident was Midleton's patience scored the all important goal with 20 min left after missing a few good chances they kept at it and got there rewards when Alan O'Flynn's shot from just inside the box beat keeper at near post.
Next up is Bandon Sunday morning where a win may see us into the 1/4 finals of Keane cup.

Keane Cup v Leeside in Little Island on Saturday 25th August 2012
Leeside 2 Midleton 1

Season opener away to Leeside. After a very good preseason including a 5 nil v Leeside in Midleton. Midleton struggled on a very poor tight and heavily sanded rabbit holes. Midleton controlled most of possession and with couple of half chances always ran the risk of concededing, which happened after the hour mark with the pitch and rabbit hole playing its part. Midleton rallied and levelled the score with new signing Emmet O'Hanlon scoring after a corner was not cleared. A late mix up in the defense let in Leeside to score the winner. Overall Midleton pleased with effort and tempo but not the result.
