Under-17B 2013/14 Match Reports

League at home to Carrigaline United on Sunday 23rd March 2013
Midleton 0 Carrigaline United 3

Following our recent defeat at home to Kanturk with only nine players available for selection in that contest there was a slight improvement on numbers today with twelve boys present representing Midleton against a full strength Carrigaline. In the early exchanges we were displaying the better football with Luke Finnerty and Pa Horgan eliminating any threat from the visitors. A simple mistake though allowed Carrigaline to receive a through ball from the left that resulted in the ball being lofted high to the back post where it was bundled over the line putting Carrigaline one up. We were guilty of wasting numerous goal scoring opportunities throughout the first half but felt we could easily turn it around with the advantage of the wind in the second half.

Doug Quealey had to be replaced due to injury early after the restart with Fionn Bailey eager to get the opportunity to play and his contribution was certainly positive. Shane Murphy and Jack Enright were doing their best to create chances in attack but our finishing wasn't clinical enough and repeating the earlier pattern where we were failing to retain possession in attacking positions. Carrigaline were to score two more goals against us and its disappointing being on a losing side but this season we have had a lot of injury and illness and we cannot compete without the availibility of a full squad. At times we played some good football but success is earned and today it was Carrigaline who earned and deserved their victory.

Team: Colin Dempsey O Reilly, Doug Quealey, Luke Finnerty, Pa Horgan, Cian McNerney, Alfonso Cazorla, Finnian Murphy, Fergal Roche, Jack Enright, Shane Murphy, Jack Winkworth and Fionn Bailey.

League away to Blarney United on Friday 17th January 2014
Blarney United 2 Midleton 2

With two U17 Blarney teams scheduled to be played on Sunday 20th the decision to reschedule this fixture to Friday 17th was respectfully agreed by Midleton to assist and resolve this minor inconvenience. It was really encouraging to see fourteen players were confirmed as available and enthusiastic to play this game at short notice. We set out a good competitive starting eleven despite the unavoidable absence of some key players and quickly set the pace of this contest. Stephen O'Flynn's performance was commanding and with the support from Aldas they took charge of the midfield. Our ability to pressurise the opposition has improved with Kevin and the two Jacks using their skill and pace in attack, threatening but just unable to score.  Occassionally we were under pressure at the back with one or two pacey Blarney attackers testing our defense but Luke  and Eoghan Collins were effectively eliminating the danger. First half passed with honours even.

Finnian who is still struggling with an injury was replaced by Doug Quealey for the second half and minutes into the restart Jack Winkworth gets the first clear opportunity to score with a one on one situation and calmly slots the ball into the empty Blarney net putting Midleton one up. Seven minutes later though Blarney were back in the game with a great goal after moving the ball quickly in the eighteen yard area for their striker to score levelling proceedings. Shortly after this Colin Dempsey O'Reilly makes a fantastic save when another shot from distance seemed to be heading towards the top corner of the net but we regained our composure and with fifteen minutes left to play Jack Winky bolts through again and repeats his earlier feat scoring his second of the evening. Sometimes a home team will get a favourable decision and unfortunately for us thats what happened with only minutes remaining a penalty was awarded and scored despite our Colin's best attempt to prevent Blarney from netting their second. Kevin O'Hanlon, Jack Enright and Fergal Roche are clearly intent on establishing their roles in the team and their energy was constant throughtout the game. Neither team dominated enough to merit victory and the result was hard earned by both. There is an obvious improvement in our performances lately and this progress can be maintained if we persevere. Well Done one and all.

League at home to Ballinhassig on Sunday 8th December 2013
Midleton 0 Ballinhassig 2

This league fixture ended up with the visitors Ballinhassig winning with a two goal margin repeating the result they achieved against us in the September game. Both Midleton and Ballinhassig teams competed equally from the start but a lapse in concentration occurred on the tenth minute when a defensive mistake allowed the Ballinhassig striker to score when we failed to clear the danger near the edge of the box. We didn't allow this to dent our confidence as we began to play with a greater deal of composure and purpose improving on an area of weakness evident from our earlier league performances. The recent signing of Luke Finnerty to the squad has immediately made a positive impact on the team and his solid performance in defense throughout the game today was recognised by all in attendance at Knockgriffin. The link up play by Fergal Roche and Finnian Murphy was quite effective, but the final delivery of the ball into the box needs work as we were creating the attacking opportunities but failing to capitalize in the final third of the pitch.

Even when Seadnaidh was introduced in the second half, again opportunities to level proceedings were being wasted. Stephen O Flynn was putting in a notable performance today working tirelessly in the middle of the park and it appeared that a draw could be achieved on the balance of play. Mistakes hurt when you get punished and that's what happened ten minutes from time when a moment of indecision followed by a slip allowed the visitors to nick the ball yards from goal and score their second of the day and that was also to be the final score. We can be encouraged by the significant improvement in our performance today and if we can maintain this progression then results should get better. Well done to all.

League away to College Corinthians on Sunday 1st December 2013
College Corinthians 2 Midleton 2

The results from our previous two league games were defeats to Kanturk and Carrigaline with only eleven players available for each of these fixtures. Today there was a full squad of sixteen players available for selection for this return league fixture against College Corinthians. From the instant the game commenced Corinthians charged down our possession of the ball and with our defense indecisive and lethargic the home team scored with Midleton seemingly unaware this was a competitive contest. Some players were quite vocal as they rallied their teammates to action and the focus of the team was evident as they pressed and dominated proceedings for the remainder of the first half, but without clear opportunities for either teams to score.

Seadnaidh Smyth and Julian Power were introduced for the second half and almost immediately the game transformed with controlled passing and attacking with intent as Shane Murphy delivered a text book cross for Jack Enright to score levelling the game. With the hunger for a victory visible Midleton again took charge and with accurate passing and movement Jack Enright repeated his earlier effort putting Midleton deservedly ahead with another fantastic finish. As the game progressed from then on Midletons urgency was becoming casual with improved play by Corinthians. Then a long ball over our defense was to be a sucker punch when we conceded a second goal having dominated the game throughout. There was time for us to win this game and just as we thought Jack Enright had scored the winner, the off-side whistle was the refs decision. Two each was the final score, almost feeling like a defeat having dominated the game but this was certainly an improvement on previous results. A number of players merit mention for their positive contribution to proceedings today, namely Doug Quealey and Fergal Roche and there were others also. Competition for selection is now becoming apparent and hopefully this will serve to improve equally our performances and results. Well Done all.

League away to Youghal United on Sunday 3rd November 2013
Youghal United 4 Midleton 0

The outcome of this contest was evident within the first fifteen minutes of play with the home team displaying the most desire and effort to secure all three points. Our defense was the busier from kickoff as Youghal quickly exposed our weakness areas as they were more competitive than us in almost all areas of the park. Some players found this challenge today difficult while others contributed positively to the game from start to finish. Shane Murphy played like a captain and worked his socks off and was unlucky not scoring on a few occassions. There are a few players that also merit mention  but one player in particular who has terrific ability and has consistently put in a solid performance since the start of the season and that is Pa Horgan. My hope is that more will respond to his example and results will only improve with determined effort.

Team - Colin Dempsey O'Reilly, Conor O'Sullivan, Julian Power, Stephen O'Flynn, Kevin O'Hanlon,
Finnian Murphy, Pa Horgan, Shane Murphy, Jack Enright, Jack Winkworth, Barry O'Callaghan, Fergal Roche, Robert O'Callaghan, Aldas Venckus, Cian McNerney.

League at home to Blarney B on Sunday 15th September 2013
Midleton 2 Blarney B 0

Knockgriffin Park was the venue with Midleton U17B team in action against Blarney U17B. Playing with the wind Midleton took control of the game from the start but our efforts on goal were reduced to occasional shots from distance despite having the lions share of the possession. On 34 mins Jack Enright got his reward when he controlled the ball well to score from close range putting Midleton one up.

The second half unfolded in a similar pattern to the first but while we began to be more creative in attack we were also becoming a little untidy in defense. Colin Dempsey O'Reilly in goal was comfortable for most of the game with the visitors reduced to rare shooting opportunities. Jack Winkworth & Kevin O'Hanlon were tormenting in attack but it was the latter that  made the vital assist gifting Shane Murphy the easiest of tap ins securing the result on 75 mins. Audrey Tshimanga captained the team today and lead by example with Finnian Murphy working tirelessly and Pa Horgan putting in another solid performance in defense. Back to winning ways so lets keep it going. Well Done All.

Team - Colin Dempsey O'Reilly, Tadgh Gilroy, Julian Power, Pa Horgan, Cian McNerney, Finnian Murphy, Audrey Tshimanga, Shane Murphy, Jack Enright, Jack Winkworth, Kevin O'Hanlon,  Robert O Callaghan, Stephen O'Flynn, Aldas Venckus & Barry O Callaghan.

League away to Ballinhassig on Wednesday 4th September 2013
Ballinhassig 2 Midleton 0

Its disappointing to encounter our first league defeat so early in the season but I cannot fault the team for this result. Two huge decisions that went against us ultimately decided the outcome of this contest. The first occasion was when a ball through the middle around the eighteen yard area was being defended perfectly by central defender Julian Power until the Ballinhassig striker pushed Julian from behind knocking him to the ground and then ran on to slot the ball past our keeper.

Then in the second half when Aldas Venckus went to clear the ball in the penalty area the ref adjudicated a foul must have been committed when one of the Ballinhassig forwards went to ground even though Aldas connected perfectly with the ball. It happens. On the balance of play a draw would have been a fair result with the chances that were being created by both teams but we must also remind ourselves to being more composed on the ball and that high levels of fitness and stamina are required by all of our players if we want to compete in this league. We will learn from this defeat and now lets prepare for our next challenge. "Heads up"

Team - Colin Dempsey O'Reilly, Tadgh Gilroy, Julian Power, Cian Savage, Cian McNerney, Finnian Murphy, Stephen O'Flynn, Audrey Tshimanga, Pa Horgan, Jack Winkworth, Kevin O'Hanlon,  Douglas Quealey,
Aldas Venckus.

League at home to College Corinthians B on Sunday 1st September 2013
Midleton 2 College Corinthians B 0

Our second league game of the season, against College Corinthians B. With an almost full squad available for selection for this contest we were prepared for a challenging competitive game but it was evident early on that our degree of possession would leave the visitors on the back foot for most of the match. Numerous chances were coming our way and eventually on fifteen minutes, Jack Winkworth put the ball in the back of the net resulting from a corner kick. It was all one way traffic and we should have closed off this contest with the opportunities we were creating. Having produced a one man show against Youghal Jack Enright was tormenting the defense but without reward.

The second goal of the game was earned and scored by Kevin O'Hanlon thirty two minutes into the second half with a text book shot beating the Corinthians keeper. Assessing the performance of the team, it was difficult to pick out one individual who shone above the rest because this was a solid performance from our defense to the hard working midfield and our strikers too but Audrey Tshimanga gave a very positive contribution to proceedings today and merits mention. It's early in the season but the attitude and commitment in this squad is really encouraging, so lets stay focused. Well Done All.

Team - Colin Dempsey O'Reilly, Tadgh Gilroy, Pa Horgan, Cian Savage, Cian McNerney, Finnian Murphy, Stephen O'Flynn, Audrey Tshimanga, Jack Enright, Jack Winkworth, Kevin O'Hanlon, Douglas Quealey, Aldas Venckus, Robert O'Callaghan & Barry O'Callaghan.
